Frame Sliders
02/15/18 at 11:31:57

Hey guys - First Post!!!

Just picked up my very first bike, a 1998 LS650. Really excited to learn to ride and to learn about my bike. So glad to have found this community!

Issue #1 though - I'm really worried about dropping it since there's no crash bar. Honestly, I don't really like the look of the crash bars on the market anyway. So I was thinking, what about frame sliders? Has anyone tried them? Maybe if the rider and passenger foot pegs are extended and fixed in place, they would do the job...

Thoughts??? Opinions??? Any input is appreciated!  Smiley

In the course of riding my Savage I have ground the rubber and some of the metal end caps off my pegs. They need to flex ,or they will jack your tires clear of the road. Frame sliders are to protect plastic body parts on motorcycles so equipped. I would suggest a safe rider course, you could learn to ride, while dropping someone else's bike, and a reduction on your insurance cost.

Take the safety course.

Pay attention to the road conditions.
If you can't see ALL of a corner, don't Bet on the conditions in the part you can't see.
If a railroad crosses the road in a curve, hit the steel standing up straight.

I watched in disbelief as my bike fell from under me at about one m.p.h.. I had taken feet off the pegs, put them down and was finishing the stop with the front brake.
I hadn't paid enough attention.
There was a decent accumulation of sand there.
The front brake is important and used properly is your friend.
Used improperly, carelessly, it, like the throttle and rear brake or about anything else, can bite you.

Frame sliders work well (or just OK) on bikes where the frame (like a sport bike with an I-4 engine) and swingarm are wide. On a bike like the Savage where the frame is narrow and there are wide items like the fuel tank, I don't thinks sliders will do about anything.

Ok, so less worrying about modifying and more worrying about learning / training to ride safely and correctly. Makes sense guys, thank you!

There are two types of riders; those that have dropped their bikes and those that are gonna. Ride with 100% concentration 100% of the time and treat the learning experience as if you are learning how to fly, and hopefully your drop will be knocking the bike over in your driveway.

I slid 2 or 3 of these bikes multiple times each and dropped them at least that many.  I had an 86 or 87 that I pretty much demolished treating it like a dirt bike.

The geometry of the bike puts the tank on the ground when it dumps, no frame slider I've seen will stop that, but I could be wrong.  Maybe custom ones would do the trick if you plan on hitting the ground often.

Don't skimp on a helmet or gear in general.

Take a safe rider education class. I took a class last year and there was a guy with a Hayabusa who was in the class for a second time and managed to fail. Another guy who was a driver-ed teacher in a local high school barely passed. It was an eye opener and everyone who takes it learns something. Like with boats, it applies to motorcycles, just because you can buy one doesn't mean you know how to operate one properly and safely. Don't underestimate the value of quality protective gear, remember if you actually do go down, you are what's important not the ride.

Frame sliders just means you plan on crashing ! Just buy a convertible.
Ride within the bikes capability and within your skill level and you'll be fine.

I'm back !
