Tail Light Out
02/09/18 at 12:26:35

Hey folks,

As the title says, my tail light is out. I have a brake light, and the bulb is good. (tested that out with several known-to-be-good bulbs) When I check the voltage, I have good voltage coming to the tail light, using the socket as ground, but no light.

Does the tail light and brake light have different grounds?

Aren't the tail light and brake light the same bulb? One filament for the tail and one for the brake. If there's voltage in the socket, it would have to be the bulb. I have not checked mine in the bike, but that's how it is in my truck.

Mine had a non original key. What i do is partially insert the key before it bottoms out. Before this I would only get brake light.

Just turn the key while not putting it all the way in.

Joelite, are you talking about the ignition key?

Are you talking about the license plate light vs the brake/tail light?

Did you check the contacts?

They do corrode.

I am referring to the tail/brake light. Yes, they are the same bulb. I checked the contacts, and they do not seem to be corroded.

The contact plate is spring loaded.
and there's 2 little wires connecting them to the main wires.
could be broken inside.

So I don't know what changed from the last test I did until the test I did just 30 seconds ago. Now I have good signal on my brake light(12.5V), but almost nothing on my tail light(0.1V which could almost be residual) for voltage.

Sounds like a hinky wire. Anyone know which colour that one is?

White/Black wire is brakelight.  Black/White wire is ground.  Brown wire is ignition power.  (Your taillight).  Brown wire will always be hot when your key is on.

FFIW, this is the best incandescent tail light, period. It has a much brighter stop/running ratio than any other bulb.
