pilot jet keeps falling out
01/29/18 at 06:42:16

I've had this problem with the pilot jet backing out into the bowl. this happens when I'm riding and the bike gets really rough and dies. The first couple of time I figured I had it out too far. but it happens more and more now. I replaced it with a new one and happened twice in the same ride. Is this a common problem. I haven't seen anything on the forum about this. can I add loctite or something to keep it from backing out?

The pilot jet is in the float bowl - is that what is falling out?

Or....is it the idle fuel mixture screw that is falling out?
(The mixture screw should have a spring, O-ring and washer that keep it from turning and seal against leaking air).

Its the pilot jet. It falls completely out of where it is screwed in and lays at the bottom of the bowl. so there's no regulation of gas through the carb.

Never heard that one before.
Long skinny jet, not the button head main?
I would not want to use locktite, the jets are only brass and you might not ever get it out again.
maybe an o-ring?

yeah, the long skinny jet. I actually replaced it twice thinking it was something from the manufacturer but same thing. Maybe teflon will be better and easier to remove if needed.

I think I would slightly deform the threads on the pilot jet....just enough that the jet has a slight drag while turning it in.

Or - you could cut the jet portion off a spare pilot jet so that only the threads remain....and use it as a "lock nut" under the real pilot jet.

Is this a previously owned bike? Sounds like a PO stripped the carb body. I hate to suggest this one, but it's safe if you are happy with the jetting - why not loctite the pilot jet into the carb body? Another method would be to braze it with some solder. With either approach, that jet will be a permanent fixture in the carb.

I have slightly deformed threads before. It usually works out great, just be cool with the starting thread. Maybe some Teflon tape?

I'm having trouble visualizing that one.

The pilot jet fits a long way up the hole - but I wonder how many threads in the carb body extend beyond the jet?

You could tap the carb body below the pilot jet for a retainer that had a larger thread size than the pilot jet....and snug a screw that is center drilled up against the bottom of the pilot jet.

I am going to have to pull out a spare carb and give it a good look at.

My bike is a 86 and 2 previous owners before me, that I know of. So there's a good chance that someone stripped it. I don't want a permanent fix because I haven't been able to get the jetting right since it's been moving around so much.

I'm not sure Epoxy will hold up to gasoline ,but if it would you could use it on the threads. the jet would be removable by applying a little heat, as it softens at only 150 degrees F.

Run it in by hand.
Wiggle it.
If it's feeling sloppy, wrap it with Teflon tape. Be careful to not let it extend above the end, fold it to be thicker in the middle of the threads and don't let it stop the jet below Home position.
If it doesn't stop the problem you're no worse off.
After that, go with Dave's answer, or start there. It's not hard to mess up brass threads. Needle nose pliers on the threads just enough to distort them enough to hold would not be difficult.
Just avoid the starting threads.
You Could even run a bit of dental floss around it.

Just pay attention to which way you wrap the Teflon tape or floss.

You just need to secure it enough so vibration doesn't allow it to back off.
The
Oring idea would work great
If you find the right size and can get a groove in the jets threaded area done right.
