poppin' dents on the weekend
11/19/17 at 11:34:51

Does anyone know here about popping a dent out of the gas tank? Specifically on a curve of the tank. I need to get this popped out before I paint it or get a tank without a dent innit. Thanks for you help.

The dent has a high spot around it.
The size of it matters.
Can you post a few pics from different angles?

Had a silver dollar sized one, used the HF tool to pop it out.
Wasn't pretty, but better than leaving it in.
Fortunately, the guy I took it to paint made it disappear.

You can try the harbor freight thing, but while you're holding pressure out, lightly and quickly tap on the high area around the dent. Also, the longer dents will work out better by pulling the shallow end first.
Last in
First out.

If that's not good enough, there's more.
You're ahead with the compound curves the in getting it shaped, but you may need to shrink some of it. It's not terribly difficult, depending on your skill set. And aptitudes.
Leave it mounted.

Looking at the size of those dents, I'd consider filling them.

As for Harbor Freight options...If it's the "crossbar" tool I'm thinking of, I wouldn't try it on the corner of the tank.  It will probably just mash in the corner where the puller sits.  Those "popper" tools are for flat surfaces.  You want a slide hammer type puller.  Youtube "PDR" or "paintless dent removal".

Harbor does sell stud welders that you could use since you are painting.

The local rental outfit rents the stud welders.

If you're Supposed to pry against the tank to lift your dent out, do a mock up, see where you have to put pressure and find stuff to lay on the tank.

The dents can't
Just be filled.
There is a high spot around them.

In the FWIW department
I did repair bent cars for a living for a few years.

I can't fill in the dents because I'm going to get it powder coated. I found a tanks for sale thats in perfect condition for less than 100 bucks so I'm just going to go that rout. If anyone wants a super cheap dented tank let me know!

That's the kind of information that would have been best shared before people tried to explain how to fix it.
