Suzuki GS850 G Tank
10/05/17 at 13:11:45

Does anyone know of anybody that has a 1979-1986 Suzuki GS850 G that would allow them to measure the length of the fuel tank?  (It can't be a GS 850GL which has a flatter style tank).

This tank may be a good tank for the "standard" style bike I am going to build from a Savage, and this GS850G tank is 5.8 gallons!  That would provide nearly 300 miles of fuel!

My only concern is that the tank may be too long for the Savage frame, and it could push the seating back too far.  I suppose I could print a copy of a photo and use the rim size to get the scale of the photo, then apply that scale to the tank and get an idea how long the tank is.

(The 850G might not be a bad motorcycle to own...it is shaft drive)!

I think that headlight is a replacement....this photo shows a different headlight.

Scaling the wheels to the tank....the tank is likely a hair less than 24" from the pointy front to the back at the bottom.  That might be a little bit too long....I will check it out tonight.

Well as much as I might like having 5.8 gallons - the GS850 tank is just too big for a Savage.

It seems that for my upcoming "standard" style project, the GT380/550 tank is likely as big as I can get and keep the tank a size that looks good.  The GT380/550 tank has about 3 gallons to reserve, and it gets me 160 miles of range on the Cafe' bike until I hit reserve.

If you want to buy the GS850 tank.....let me know!

I paid $ 134.99 for it with shipping....it sure would be nice to get all or most of that back.  It is in good shape, it is clean inside and has a couple of very small dings.  It has the fuel gauge sender and petcock with it, it does not have a fuel cap.

Dave the old Honda cb450 tank is similar to your GT tank. The CB tank holds 3.7 gallons. How much does yours hold after the modification ?

You sure could do some traveling with 5.8 gallons and your gearing !

All the factory stuff claims the GT550 tank is 4.0 gallons.

If I ride until I hit reserve and don't fill it all the way to the top.....I normally put 3 gallons in.  I doubt that the changes I made raising the center tunnel and making a notch for the cam tower take up more than a quart.
