Ok I didn't know that the LED bulbs were compatible with an incandescent setup.  I might grab a few and see how they work then.

I see there are plenty of LED bulbs but I don't know if they are a straight conversion.  12V bulbs would need a resistor as well correct?

If the LED bulb is built to replace a 1156 or 1157.....they are already modified with the needed resistors.  For a brake light or running lights you just replace the stock filament bulb with the LED - but be aware that a cheap LED may not be as bright as the original bulb was.

If the bulb is a turn signal - you may need to replace the mechanical flasher with a solid state/electronic one......or it may not flash (or will flash very quickly).

Pick the bulb type, and you can see what is available at Superbright LED.  (Maybe not the cheapest - but definitely good quality).

Has anyone had experience with Sylvania 1157 Zevo Superbright LED bulbs in the Savage tail light housing? its got an interesting angled back design that looks like it should utilize the stock reflector better than forward facing LEDs but I don't know if it it'll align correctly with the stock reflector.

From the repair manual it looks like the stock reflector is primarily aligned side to side and not top to bottom and I'm wondering if i get this LED bulb it'll install with the angled portions on the top and bottom, negating some of the potential benefits.

If no one else has any experience with these bulbs in particular i'll probably just bite the bullet and play guinea pig for the everyone.

If you are searching for an LED....they aren't rated in CP (Candlepower).  You need to pick the type of bulb base (1157, 1156, H4, etc.), then use that as the beginning of the search. Some LED bulbs are very bright....some a bit less - the brightness is measured in Lumens.  And the effectiveness of the bulb in your light (reflector/lens) can greatly change the useful light.  Light housings that use a serrated reflector to disperse the light and a smooth lens (rather than a lens with a pattern cast in) can be a real problem for LEDS, as a lot of LED bulbs aren't made to disperse the light to the reflector - some LED bulbs don't send light out to the sides.....only the top of the bulb.

Here is an example of a light that works poorly in a housing with a fluted reflector and clear lens (I mounted this is my Pontiac Vibe and it was very dim).

Bulbs that have LED oriented to the side work much better with fluted reflectors, and you have a wide choice of brightness and cost....and you do have to pay attention to physical size, as some of them can be pretty large.

Finally got around to installing the new led bulb. The LEDs lined up with the reflector very well. I'm interested to see what it looks like tonight.
