Good point! I was thinking of 3.00 or a 3.50 wide rim, wider would make the profile flatter and decrease the diameter.
It will flatten the profile - but it won't decrease the diameter. The chords in the tire carcass won't compress when you make the tire beads go wider.....they can stretch a bit when you are riding at high speed and increase the diameter temporarily.

OK, then it's not necessary to buy too wide of a rim for that reason
I bought a 1st gen Suzuki DR750S wheel from eBay, hope it's a direct fit. If not, the rim and spokes should fit the Savage hub as the drum brake is the same diameter and the rubber cushions are the same.
130/80-17 should fit nicely and increase the diameter about 6 percents compared to stock.
Chain & sprockets on the way, too

DR750S rear wheel is a direct fit, it's the exact same hub as in Savage, marked "814".

That is a good find Kojones (I just don't feel good about typing your forum name....even with the K replacing the C).
The DR750 is a rare bird in the US, and it will be hard for anyone over hear to find that rear wheel.
Maybe you should see if you can get the engine from that bike!

I like the bike. Will the foot controls & pegs be moved back?

There's a wheel for sale if anyone is interested
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Suzuki-DR-750-S-DR-BIG-SR-41-B-Hinterrad-Felge-mit-Na...
I'm quite sure the seller accepts an offer of 80 euros, shipping seems to be the same to US that it is to Finland.
If the DR big just had an air-cooled engine I would be interested, liquid cooling is one more thing to worry about.
And no, I'm not changing my forum name

At some point, yes. Still have so many things to do for this winter and only about six months of time

Kojones, I'm not criticizing your paint job so don't take this wrong. I'm not a fan of the stock tank cause of the exposed seam going around the tank and it wonder if it was painted black blending into the frame if it would change the appearance much. A quick way to check it would be a roll of black electrical tape to cover up the flange/seam and it would smaller but retaining the same shape.

Just ordered one from a german breaker - let's see just how good the wheel is and I'll then buy a new tire with rolling diameter equal to the stock tire.
I'm sure a 17" wheel with a ...
130/80R17 will perform just as well as a 140/80R15, if not better

Great idea! I like the stock tank, but it might be better with the seam masked. The tank and side covers are getting a new paint anyway, thinking of british racing green.

You might wanna consider sizes 4.6-17 or 5.1-17, as they have higher load rating than the stock tire, 130/80-17 has only 65. Both are technically just fine, but at least in Finland one could get in trouble with wrong tyres

Oooo, one of my favorite all time colors growing up. Had a 73 MGB rust bucket. Had dreams of fixing it up and laying BRG on it. But, I was young, dumb and poor so I sold it for $300 instead. lol
On a side note, I'm a sucker for British design. Too bad everything British I've ever owned was a POS. Even my wife's GREEN 2012 Land Rover Freelander. Cute little car but a POS. I mean it was 2012, anyone can build a reliable car in 2012, right? At least that's what I told myself! A year later my wife was begging me to trade it in on something else and it was gone before the 50k mile warranty was expired. LOL
So yeah, BRG all the way!!!!

The Savage has a Mammoth rear tire which is oversized and overengineered in respect to both speed and weight.
I do not see how a 130/80x17 can fail when HD Dynas or Road Kings of the same year use 130/90x16... and weigh exactly twice as much...
