Re-lacing stock hub with a 17 inch rim
08/22/17 at 14:32:22
I would like to have a 17 inch rear wheel to use with 130/80 dual sport tires & knobbies. I have a spare Savage rear wheel, so I still need a new rim and spokes or a suitable wheel. Any suggestions how to approach this?
Thanks in advance.

Buchanan's Spoke and Wheel in California can fix you up with the correct spokes, and a rim with the holes punched at the correct angle.
I don't know how expensive it will be to ship the parts to Finland!

+1 on Buchanan's. I found them great to work with. Great communication too. Their Sun line is their own line and it's high quality.

I used Woody's Wheel Works in Colorado. Might as well do their tubeless conversion while you are at it. Nice to never have to buy tubes again, and the tires can be plugged if/when you get a flat.
they've done a few wheels for me.

In theory, theory and reality are the same. In reality, they aren't...

Very, very expensive, at least for the rim
I was thinking of doing it myself during the winter and leave the truing to a pro.
I read something about a weird spoking pattern that Suzuki uses, I was thinking of purchasing a DR rear wheel, disassembling it and putting it back together with the LS hub. If there just was a DR wheel with the same size hub as the Savage it would be almost too easy

As long as the hub and the rim are both 36 spoke, you're all set. Nothing strange about the pattern. Search on my name for my DRZ Tracker thread in the Cafe and you will find a how-to on wheel lacing and truing embedded in there.

One of the issue is that the drum brake requires short spokes, and a rim with the holes drilled/punched at a pretty steep angle.
If the 17" rim comes from a donor bike that uses a disc brake, the spoke angle will likely be too shallow to work well with the Savage hub. Some folks have just taken a drill bit and wallowed out the holes in the rim....that isn't something I would recommend doing.

Good point Dave. I think Buchanan's can provide a rim with the nipple holes at the correct angle. At a charge, of course.

Good information, thanks. Old DR's have drum brakes, so no problem there.

Excellent link, thank you! Postage from UK is much more reasonable than overseas, altough just for the spokes it isn't that much. But it wouldn't even be too expensive to send them the hub.

One of the things you need to be aware of - is that modern dual sport tires seem to require a pretty wide rim. Even a narrow 120/90-17 tire needs a rim not less than 2.50" wide.
Be sure the tires you are looking for will fit on the rim you buy.

Good point! I was thinking of 3.00 or a 3.50 wide rim, wider would make the profile flatter and decrease the diameter.

I have just had a front wheel 19 x 2.50 ( including tyre ) built onto my hub, ss spokes and ally rim, and a rear wheel built from my rear hub with a 16"x 3.00 by Central Wheel Components in the UK and they did a really good job - bloody expensive mind but that was ss spokes, chrome plated brass nipples, ally rim,new tyre, blasting and powder coating both hubs and they built them and balanced them , so if you just wanted spokes and the rim they could probably do that. If I was you I'd give them a ring ( I hope you can speak English cos I'm pretty confident none of them speak Finnish
) Although them being from Birmingham they speak a strange variation of English
. If you want to p.m. me I'll sort out their phone number.

email sent to central wheel components and one finnish shop, we'll see what kind of an offer they can make.
I found a 17 inch Suzuki rear wheel on eBay, 160mm drum brake and same rubber cushions, wheel bearings and same bushing between the bearings.
Looks promising, hope the seller accepts my lowball offer
