"If I ever did buy a HD (which is unlikely) I'd opt for one of the lighter bikes up around 1200 cc. But honestly, if I was gonna spend that kind of money I'd prefer to work the S40 (rebore etc) and just get a bit more or of that - and probably save myself a fist full of bucks too  Cool"

I thought of doing all the mods on the S40 too (big bore kit, etc), but I bought the Sportster for the same amount of money it would have cost me to upgrade the LS650. As for the weight of the Sportster, I am 69 years old and only 5' 3" tall, and so far I have had no problem riding it. I believe the Sportster is the lighter of the HD bikes, unless the Street 500/750 are lighter.

JLC: you have my admiration!  How is the weight moving it around a garage?  Access to my rented garage is through a 34" wide gate, uphill!  Cool

I can move it around the garage fine, but I admit I don't have to push it uphill!

Was tempted to buy this until I realised I was 73 and looking at 560 lbs of form over function. Rats! Cool

Zip, That's my sporty minus the sissy bar ! The 02 was about 505 lbs the later rubber mounted engine models started at about 560lbs . But mine gots lots of mods , but I can tell you it's a great bike even if it's a tad heavier than I prefer. It eats up country roads but it requires some sweat to keep up to lighter bikes. It builds muscle and skill. But I much prefer my 308 lb Savage/RYCA tracker for the nastier twisties , it requires far less effort and can be ridden faster !

JLC

I had a 1200 Sportster (2004 model) before I got a 883.    It was fast  Smiley  , the hot-rod of the Harley Family till the liquid cooled bunch came along.
The 1200 I had tore-up from doing 2000 to 4000 in 2nd and third gear trying to keep-up with a bunch of SAVAGES .
Best I can figure , the .0002" or .0003" of play in-between the Crank-shaft and the Drive/Alt. Sprocket must have increased with the up and down rpm's.    The splines , simply "Disappeared" !  Shocked    Well , there were traces of them in the primary oil when I drained it , so technically they really didn't "Disappear" , but they were gone when I looked to see why the starter couldn't turn the motor.    Grin

Same motor /  883 = 3" pistons  / 1200 = 3.5" pistons + high test fuel.

I'll stick to my Savages!  Unless, of course, a reduced price Rebel 500 appears on CL. Ugly bike, but nice motor. Cool

I just came back from a back to back ride, first with the S40, then the Sportster 883. Both bikes have similar mileage (just shy of 1300).  My S40 is definitely more nimble in the twisties, but I don't like the forward controls, and I owned the bike long enough to know I never will. I am much more confident doing slow, tight turns with my new (to me) 2007 Sportster than my S40, I think thanks to the handlebars and the standard foot controls on the Sportster. Contrary to what I anticipated, the Sportster feels much more powerful than the S40, despite the increased weight.

I agree with everything you said, but my age, condition and logic say the S40 is the bike for me.
Neither of my bikes are stock, just one appears so.
Cheers!  Cool

The only mod I am going to do to the S40 is the front Kawasaki pulley. I already have the part, but I have been too lazy to install it!  Smiley
