Valve adjustment problem. TDC???
08/10/17 at 18:35:55

I've read the tech section on tdc, I read the manual, and watched a million videos on YouTube about it. I thought I had a firm understanding of it so I decided to tackle adjusting my valves. The only problem is the clicking sound got louder. I'm assuming I didn't have it at tdc like I thought i did. According to my understand the white marker on the side of the engine is suppose to line up with the notch on the side of the inner casing. Also you're suppose to turn the bolt until compression reaches the highest point. When I did this and adjusted the valves the ticking was still present during idle(only much louder). I read where other people had the same problem and their tdc was off. Can someone please explain the easiest way to properly find tdc to me??

Rotate the crankshaft CCW.
Everything you say you did is right.
You have to stop it At tdc and Not back up.
I use a breaker bar.

Ok. I definitely backed it up when I went past tdc slightly. I'll try again.

Well I just rewrote this section because alot of people are getting it wrong.

Quote:
Turn the flywheel around several times while watching the rocker arms and the adjusting screw go up and down to get a feel for what's going on. As you turn the crankshaft, keep an eye on the intake valves.  They open immediately before the compression stroke.  So watch them go down then come up, next time the mark on the crank lines up with the mark on the case, you will be at TDC on the compression stroke.  Note both sets of rocker arms with the adjusting screws are up.

And BTW, I don't bother taking out the plug.  Believe me, I know when the compression stroke is.   Roll Eyes

That's the only thing you have said that is bothersome.
You're Doing your own maintenance, and you don't have anyone in the garage watching and helping. Dude, it's all good..

removal of the sparkplug helps as you won't have to fight compression.

Vercy & JOG ,I thought it might be easier for a junior member to place the piston on TDC with the sparkplug removed .It is his first time. I didn't find much humor in your follow  up comments as I never was lucky enough to have a sister and my wife of 35 yrs passed away from cancer in 2013 .I wish better luck for you and yours.
