In addition to the TDC issues, make sure you are using the feeler gauge correctly.  if you have it twisted or bent too much you could be getting a false reading and leaving the adjustment loose.

Can you describe How that could happen? In the twelve years I've been here , I've never heard of that.

Thanks, I enjoy tossing things out for people to laff about. And no, I would never knowingly do that.
That said, I don't have a great memory and Could possibly say something in the future, I hope not, and I'll try to not.

JOG,

The goal is too keep it flat as you snug things up.  Pushing the gauge too far in, twisting it, or wedging it can leave you with a looser adjustment than desired.  The chances of this happen increase as the gauge gets thicker/stiffer.  Removing the gauge from the set helps as it makes it harder to apply twisting/wedging forces because you don't have the extra leverage at the end of the gauge.  Making sure you only use the tip helps as well because it allows the gauge flex more naturally.   All of these things are an afterthought for an experienced mechanic, but can easily be overlooked by a novice.

I removed the gauge from the set, put a ski trip curve on it and bent it into a Z.

Right on JOG!  That's what I'm talking about.  Details that people might need to know.  I'll keep the Z bend in mind when I get around to mine the first time (any pictures?).

I know it took me a couple of tries to get it right when I had my old Triumph.   Seemed simple enough when I was doing the the first time, it but it was louder than when I started.  Working with metal sticks in tight areas leads to "experience".  Smiley
