An arm with 4 pins the size of the large bolt holes will work. Probably a piece of aluminum or welded 1/4" steel with some reinforcement ribs welded on. The wheels and gears are turning now.

I'm thinking a flat plate with threaded holes in the pattern of the motor mounts. Threaded stand-offs that can be threaded into either side of the plate so that the motor can be disassembled or built from either the right or left case.
Once I have the motor stand painted, I'll move on to the horizontal gag.

That's even better than my idea Armen. I was just thinking left side first cause that's how I built mine. Far more sophisticated than my cut wooden blocks. Grin

Every motorcycle shop I have worked at used a small pallet made from 4 boards when separating the left/right side center cases - 2 boards on the bottom and 2 laid crosswise on top and screwed together to support the left side engine case when removing the right side.  The boards were about 18" long and were 2x4 pine lumber (hardwood would be the deluxe model)!  The height allowed the left side of the crank and countershaft to clear the bench, and the wood was soft enough to prevent any damage to the gasket surface.  When the engine is torn down this far - there is no head or cylinder....so the engine is pretty light at this point.

The engine mount that Armen is making would be extremely handy....I am probably going to make a much simpler version that is just some angle that can be bolted to the motor mounts.....and to 2x4's on the bottom to keep the engine upright.

So, here it is. Dummied up. Not painted yet.
Found some scrap 3/4" plywood. Screwed together two layers.
Laid one crankcase half on the wood. Used a transfer punch to locate the holes.
Poked in some holes. Screwed in four 3/8-16 inserts into the plywood. Used some scrap lengths of 3/8 threaded rod and a few nuts and washers.
The holes go straight through, so the threaded rod can be inserted from either side, making it possible to lay either the left or right case half on the gag, depending on which side you have up. The nut and washer on the bottom stiffen up the rod, the ones on the top set the height needed for whichever half you are using.
Pretty stupid simple, easy to make, just some scrap and a few inserts.
I know, you used a petrified armadillo carcass when you learned this in the Army, blah blah blah.
Just posting this stuff for general interest, and maybe inspiration. Not saying anyone has to do it this way  Wink

I know, Rulttly. I was going to take some aluminum round stock, turn down one end to fit in the case holes, and thread the other end. Then I reminded myself that sometimes, Done is Beautiful. And with this set-up, it's easy to adapt to other motors. All I'll have to do is drill more holes, install more threaded inserts, and adjust the height of the nuts on the threaded rods.
