What is this cord?
07/24/17 at 16:50:22

Hey All,

I'm hoping someone can quickly identify this cord for me?  I'm still learning this bike, and recently went for a 200 mile ride to the Oregon Coast and back.  The bike's been parked on the street for the past 3 days, and today I looked at it and saw this cord hanging out, uncapped.  Did it just get knocked loose on the ride?  I don't think anyone was messing with the bike, but can't identify the cord in the Owner's Manual and don't yet have the Service Manual.

 Thank you!

Not stock.
Probably a pigtail for a float charger.

Yep, cord for trickle charger. See how it comes down and is connected to the battery terminal? That's what that zip tied line is. Should see one on the negative cable on the other side of the battery also.

And it is capped, that little strap on the end hanging down holds the cap from being lost.

I know - I capped it before taking the photo.  That's why I specified that it was uncapped when I noticed it  Wink

You can get the float charger at Walmart for about $20.00 and it's a good investment. Saves batteries.

The cap on the one I have on my sporty came off (unknown to me at the time) and the cord was hanging down behind the transmission.  It was in contact with the back of the trans and was causing the battery to slowly drain.  It was really a hassle.  Be careful to keep the cap !

that is a pleasant discovery.  Same thing happened to me years ago, when I was new to motorcycles and I bought a used bike - the charging pigtail flopped out from under the seat while I was struggling with a dying battery.

It's a pretty decent find - thanks everyone!  I just bought a new oil filter and some oil today.  I'm really excited to learn with this bike, and this forum is already so helpful.

IIRC, the exposed pin on the charging lead is - (ground). I don't understand how the ground lead hitting a ground (engine case or frame) would cause a battery drain.
Unless the insulation melted and the usually covered hot lead connected to the chassis/engine ground.
And if it did, those cables were built with a fuse on the hot (+) side which should have blown if there was a dead short.
This only becomes and issue with the older Brit bikes that are 'Positive Earth'. On those, the exposed (-) negative terminal can short out to the case/frame ground.

Be very careful with the oil filter - if you put it on backwards no oil will flow, and you can crack the side cover and potentially ruin the engine.

The filter only has a center hole on one side - and that opening must face the center of the engine.
