Sticking carb slide?
07/10/17 at 14:53:02

I still haven't fixed my router problem yet. I'm still locked out of this website at home so bear with me. I'm using a work computer so responses will be slow coming.

The bike starts and runs just fine. No missing or bogging at idle. It won't take any throttle though. If I pull the "choke" out 1 notch it wants to stumble and die, but not always. I switched to a Raptor with no luck fixing the problem. No fuel filter to cause any headaches either.

I took the carb apart thinking it was running rich. At least to my untrained brain it "feels" rich. Maybe it's running lean? The only thing that looks out of place are the wear marks on the slide and the slide bore. Sometimes it feels as if there's too much friction pushing the slide up by hand. Sometimes it feels fine. It does fall back to it's resting position every time though.

Is there a way to clean the slide and lube it? Would it help? I assume the engine would just suck in any lube. Would 1000 grit sandpaper in the slide bore do the trick? Can the bore be polished without causing a rich/lean condition later on? I'm thinking about even polishing it with up and down strokes with aluminum foil. These are just some ideas I've found with Google. I wanted to ask you guys before I did ANYTHING. You guys know more about this bike than Google ever will!

You didn't mention what jets you're currently using.
What exhaust/intake?

Those wear marks I have too.
I would limit polishing to the carb body.
You shouldn't have to worry about direction with 1000 paper.
Anything you do to the slide just removes the drylube.

52.5 pilot, 150 main - It's in my signature to make things easy.  Wink

The bike is stock except for a Dyna muffler.

What you get with a sticking slide is nothing.
You can open it WFO and nothing happens until it unsticks then whoa nellie.
If it bogs, then you have fuel flow problem.
check the main and pull the needle jet if you can get it out.
only other option is to clean the carb and hope for the best.

The only thing I would try on the slide is a spray graphite.  It dries and is a slippery surface like the original - although I doubt it lasts as long.

Blaster makes some and you can buy it at Lowe's, Home Depot and similar places.

https://www.lowes.com/pd/Blaster-5-5-oz-Blaster-Graphite-Dry-Lube/50102616

Generally a sticky slide makes the bike run erratic at minor throttle changes.....as it stays stuck in one place until you make big movements of the throttle.

I put my slide in once and somehow cocked the spring or pinched the diaphragm.   Went to go to work the next day and it would hardly accelerate.  Just like you described.  I popped the top off and reset the diaphragm and made sure the spring was straight as I put the top back one.  Runs perfect.

Check your diaphragm for tears or holes, make sure it's seated properly and carefully compress the spring when you put the top on.  With any luck, it will run like it should.

You told us about your jets and HD muffler, have you done the spacer mod ? you may be running lean in mid throttle (where you spend most of your time ) and the slide is running "dry" that may cause the wear your seeing on the slide (just guessing).
