Why four holes in the back of a stock muffler?
05/31/17 at 11:50:18

I have seen a few Savages/S40 with four holes drilled in the back of the stock muffler. Is this just for better sound, or does it help the engine breathe a bit better?

Guessing ,I'd say both ,but not knowing the exact result you don't know if or how to rejet,Id rather go with a Dyna ,better sound, and easy to rejet and you lose 10 lbs of the bike(like gaining 1 hp) not counting the better performance (more hp).

I keep reading about folks finding the right (with rail) Dyna mufflers for $5 to $20. No such luck here in Colorado Springs. A quick look today found only one pair of Dyna mufflers for sale on Craigslist at $90, and it's the "wrong ones". Also, the last guy I found with Dyna mufflers for sale would not split the two, and he wanted $115. I might try the local HD dealer, but everything on his website seems expensive, so... I had a Delkevic short slash cut exhaust on my S40 for a while. More power, nice looking, much lighter than stock, but too loud for me.

You can find Dyna mufflers on eBay regularly...some are cheap, some are in good shape - sometimes you can find nice ones very affordably.  And if you have to buy a pair it is not a big deal - you can sell the other one in the Marketplace on this forum without any fee!

Make sure to check your little mom-and-pop motorcycle shops. They will sometimes have them from Harley muffler swaps and are not as attached to them as the HD dealer. I got a mint pair from a little one-man shop here for $40.

My dyna doesn't have ,a rail ,some just have two welded "plugs " with female threads . I used one of these off a sportster by bolting a piece of flat bar to the stock mount and drilling two holes where I needed it to pick up the muffler.

Mine originally didn't have any holes besides the normal central exhaust hole, so I tried the extra hole thing.  Is louder, but I noticed NO increase in performance, but noticeable increase of "surging" probably due to needing to be jetted richer.  No deeper sound.  So...I ended up simply welding the holes back shut.

Also tried the "Dyna" thing and thought the benefits were way overblown.  Sold my Dyna, went back to quiet stock.

I like riding by myself in the hills/mountains of western North Carolina.  Just me and my lonesome.  No one to impress!
