Starter Direction

Hi Folks,

So my parts arrived for the previous thread. http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1493666359

I slapped them in and heard a wonderful whirring noise. After much confusion I realized that it sounded as though the starter was simply spinning the wrong way. Sure enough, when I pulled it out and examined it with a test run on the bench it was running in the wrong direction to crank the engine over.
Has anyone seen this before? Is there a way to reverse it? With only one wire going in I am confused.  Huh I'm happy that I know what is wrong, but confused why it's doing it and a little miffed that I'm not up and running right now.

Thanks in advance!

Well....I guess it is possible you installed the center tube piece with the magnets glued in 180 degrees out of the proper alignment.  That might put the + magnet where the - magnet should be.

I thought there was some kind of notch in the assembly to keep that from happening?

If the starter spins the wrong way, take it out and turn the bike around and put it back in. Problem solved.

The strangest thing about it is that it was spinning the correct direction in September.

Well I assumed you had recently took the starter apart.......with this new revelations I believe it is more likely you have your battery installed backwards.

If you look at your headlight and it's Darker than the Blakkist of Nights, you've got the battery in bakkerds fershure

Well, My headlight doesn't look like my coffee. And it happens both on the bike and when bench testing, so I don't think it's my battery.

Now, when I was trying to determine what was wrong before (turned out to be the starter solenoid.) I did open the starter motor up. I did not think that I changed anything. Guess I'll have to head further into it this afternoon.

You
Opened up the starter.

Did you remove the anti reverse stuff?

How are you deciding it's bakkerds?

If it's spinning so as to drive the crankshaft the same way the wheels roll, it's right.

If you put the brush plate back 180 deg from where it was it will reverse rotation.
I've done it before with a Honda starter. Don't know if it's possible with the savage starter to do that though.

Rotation should be ccw looking from the motor end toward the shaft.
