Well I didn't really NEED to buy another bike, but what the hell.
A 06' like new with 00998 miles on the clock!

It has been a long time since I got on one of these stock.
Now to make up a list of things to do to it before I actually ride it.

Other than checking the oil level and putting petrol in the tank, why do you need to "do anything to it" before you ride it? Possibly check the tyre pressure as well. Oh, I suppose you could check or maybe replace the battery.

Lets see, oil & filter, check valves, check plug and jetting, 25 tooth front pulley, modded cam chain tensioner, big magnet under bike to trip lights, new petcock, check head bolts, lube clutch & throttle cables. I have 2 other bikes to ride, no big hurry to get this one going. Most of the stuff I have done to the other S40 I want to do to this one before it goes on the road.

How much lighter is your wallet ?
I paid $1500 for my 96 donor bike with 809 miles on it and it was here in town. I'm always looking for another good deal that's just sleeping in someones garage. The wife is always hoping I don't find one , but she will understand , she knows of my sickness.  Grin

Your new bike looks really good, great color.  Everyone knows you can't own too many motorcycles.  Congratulations

I suppose it never got it's first service, so you could change the oil. If on the other hand it did, it can't have got very dirty.

Badwolf:

IF you have not got it running yet - don't change the oil & filter before you get it running the first time.  And also take out the plug and put a small bit of oil (Sta-Bil fogging oil is best) in the cylinder to get it lubed.  When you change the oil and filter on a bike that has been sitting - you create a situation where the engine won't get any oil to the bearings until the empty oil filter housing is pumped full of oil.....and all the sitting has allowed most of the oil film to drip or evaporate off the bearing surfaces.

It also doesn't hurt to remove the front valve inspection cap, and spray some oil back onto the cam lobes and rockers.  Also turning the engine over with the spark plug out to build up the oil pressure before you start the bike is not a bad idea.

We need a sticky for the protocol for starting an engine that we know nothing about.
And clean out down around the plug before you pull it.
Everyone NEEDS to buy another bike.
Not being able to admit that is a sign of addiction.
