I NEED NEW TIRES
05/17/17 at 15:03:07

My original 17yo IRCs are so cracked and dry rotted--they got to go. I'm thinking of going with Shinko 230 front and rear, but the spec says they tubeless. How's that going to work? Go with a different tire (IRC) that's tube type? Even the tire don't quite match up with OE spec--140/90-19. If it's okay to run a tube in the tires, what would the tube size be? I know what size tube to get on my mountain bike, but not on my motorbike!

tubeless tires can be run with tubes... done all the time.
refers more to the shape of the bead and the tires are sealed.

Your front tire will be a 100/90-19, but we don't know what size rear tire you are going to choose.

The 130/90-15 is almost identical in size to the original 140/80-15, it has about 2% larger diameter and the tread is nearly exactly the same....it is a nice tire for the bike.  If you want a beefier back tire that is noticeably bigger - the 140/90-15 size will fit and add a noticeable change in gearing as a result of the larger tire diameter.  (if you have saddlebag brackets you may need to install bolts with low profile heads).

I'm pretty okay on tire size. It's the inner tube size that I can't find any info on.

Yes...Perhaps you didn't understand that my comment was a question.

If you tell us the size of the rear tire you are "OK" with, we could more accurately recommend a tube size that will fit it!

The original tires are really easy to wear out.   I'm amazed at their age !

at 17 years old they must have a 100,000 miles on them ?  Grin

Choosing what size tube to buy.....depends on your tire size, and what brand of tube you buy.  Some tubes are listed in the metric designation, while others use the "inch" standard.

For your front tire if you are buying a 100/90-19 tire - use a 100/90-19 tube...or a 3.25 - 3.50-19.  For the valve stem you want a TR-4.

For the rear tire the same tube works for the stock sized 140/80-15 and 130/90-15 tube.  It is hard to find a tube in this size from the online retailers - as it is not a very common size.  You can find that tube on eBay pretty easy.  If you want a straight valve stem you choose a TR-4.  For a 90 degree stem you want a PV-78 - but you may not be able to find that valve stem on this size tube.

If you use the larger than stock 140/90-15 rear tire, the tubes are the same 140/90-15 size.  And you can find them at most online retailers as this is a common sized tire - and you can find the straight TR-4 valve stem or the 90 degree PV-78 valve stem.

And don't be surprised if you can't find a tube for the front/rear made by the same company.....you might have to mix and match from different companies.

This tube works fine in the 140/80-15 stock size tire:

I buy it every time I replace the rear tire.

My old IRCs have 9,830 miles on them, but sat idle outside for better than six years. They have plenty of rock-hard tread left and the sidewalls have more cracks than a South Louisiana interstate. Remarkably, the tubes still hold air pressure--I haven't added any air in months. I did have to mix makers to get the correct inner tube sizes. Tires and tubes have been shipped and on their way. Expect delivery on Monday. I hope my son can help me put them on before he heads for boot camp end of next week. The new drag bars look great and feel even better.
