How important is knurling?

Hey guys,  i was looking at some handlebars at a bike shop yesterday. They had some Bitwell bars that I thought would work great with the old style risers on the Savage, but they haven't got any knurling.

I took a photo for comparison. The top bar is the one I recently bought and fitted (They required a 2" spacer with the short risers). I reckon the middle pair could be a possible alternative, without the spacers. The bottom one's would definitely work.

So it got me thinking, has anyone tried bars without knurling? Did you find any issues?

If you ever have problems with bars not clamping down tight, cut a piece of emery cloth like plumbers use to go between the bars and clamps. That should take care of any slippage. If you are trying to use the wrong size bars, then you need a adapter, or better yet just match the bars and clamps.

Isalnd,

After I am sure I have a set of new handlebars in the position I want I drill down through the top clamp on the riser, through the handle bars and then tap threads and put button Allen head machine screws in the tapped holes.

It is best to drill the top clamps in a drill press so you get started straight with the hand drill going through the bars.

I've got unknurled bars (second set )and have had no problem with either slipping so I don't know why you would bother pegging them. Buying knurled bars ,is iffy ,most of them are made to fit Harleys that run risers that are much closer together than ours.

Yeah that is a bit of a problem. The knurling one the one's I got are closer than the stock risers, but they are each wide enough to reach most of the way under the clamps. They show in the centre though. Not a big issue, but not perfect either!

If I knew then, what I know now, I probably would have given the one's in the middle of the picture a go.

Having said that I'm very happy with my current setup  Smiley

Another one for not important at all. Especially with lower bars. My other bike has 16" apes that are 1.5" diameter with no knurling. Granted the custom risers I made for it I have a set screw going to them but that's more for peace of mind, they would have been fine without.

After enough absurdity is sold as fact , seeing it offered in mock ignorance is kinda funny, innit?

I'm trying to imagine what a knurling match would look like ... for some reason, in my head, it looks something like arm wrestling ... or 'slaps'!
