Lemur, chances are if he changes to something really loud you won't be keeping up you'll be passing him .If loud pipes helped make your bike run faster we would all be running straight pipes! loud pipes don't usually better performance, and can be very hard to tune your carb to.Get a Dyna, tune your carb, and you'll be shocked at the difference in the way your bike runs!

I meant keeping up with him in decibel level. I was just trying to state I want something more substantial without going crazy.

This is a shorty york exhaust from ebay. It was like 50 bucks and everyone that's heard it likes it. It is baffled the wife even said it's a lot better than  when it was straight piped.

That your goal is to Keep up with the Jones's in Db production makes " without going crazy "
technically impossible.
The exhaust is , by necessity, restrictive. It determines Where in the RPM range your power will be.

This is all getting taken out of context.

I clearly meant to say that I don't want to keep up with the joneses. I'm not looking for something very loud, just something comparable to a stock 883 Iron exhaust. Once my buddy upgrades his exhaust on the 883 I won't be upgrading mine again. I simply want something more substantial without going crazy.

The consensus here has been to go with a Dyna and trial-and-error test it for how loud I want to go with drilling out the baffle. Or to go with the Supertrapp and do the same thing.

I had a Supertrapp with 8 discs.....it was not obnoxiously loud - but it still was too loud for me and I replaced it with a DYNA.  Much more civilized and it did not make children cry when I passed by.

I had fourteen disks. Noise varies with gas. I could roll by a hospital or horses and riders and not shake anyone up. Trapps are tunable, matching the carb jets and getting a great zero to sixty and a not too shabby top end is possible. They are Expensive.

Check out Cone Engineering (coneeng.com).  They offer all stainless mufflers and you can pick the size, shape & sound level you want.
Priced from about $120-140.
They make quality stuff.

I have never understood the desire to make bikes sound LOUDER. A loud bike is unlikely to make a driver pay more attention and it's very likely to annoy everybody in the vicinity. If you want to drive more safely, pay more attention to what the drivers around you are doing and compensate accordingly. If you really want to get their attention, beep your horn.

Good point Dave! and if you think the horn isn't loud enough ,it's a lot cheaper to upgrade than the exhaust.

Loud exhausts are for narcissistic riders who only ride because they want to get people's attention. Ever notice how the people with the loudest exhausts are constantly revving their engines?
