Bike just died while riding and wouldnt restart
04/10/17 at 10:12:47

I was riding my 95 savage and all of a sudden the bike just shut off. I thought maybe I had ran out of gas so I turned it to reserve and it started back up but after about five miles it stranded me on the side of the road. I had someone bring me some fuel and I put about 1.5 gallons in the tank and it wouldn't start unless I had full throttle on and then it would only lug and as soon as I put it in gear and feather the clutch out it would die. I believe I am running really rich because I was trying to tune the air mixture and I stripped the screw at about 3 turns out. Any suggestions on what I should do?

Also to get it home I had to pull the air filter just so it would stay running

First thing to check is the safety cut-outs...
Jumper the connections... Clutch at the handlebar and neutral safety under the seat...

Did you try switching the petcock to PRI....and removing the vacuum line on the petcock?  If there is fuel in the vacuum tube - the diaphragm in the petcock has gone bad.

Test your petcock!

You may have fouled the spark plug.

You're gonna have to check the carb.
make sure there's a washer under the main jet.
also check the slider for free movement, it doesn't take much to cause it to hang up... only takes a fingerprint.

Any advice for jetting to compensate for the air mix screw?

You are chasing problems without any understanding of the route cause.

Have you confirmed adequate spark?
Is the ECM functioning properly?
Is there adequate fuel flow?

You seem to be turning knows and adjusting things without any background to the actual problem. This will take you further away from solving the problem as you may have to undo everything you've done.

The fuel flow is fine. I will be checking spark tonight when I get home and I know its running rich due to the fact that it won't run while the air filter is in. I haven't done anything yet just getting the opinions of other experienced people before I try and figure it out

Is your plug wet fouled or carbon fouled?  Sounds like your float needle is stuck open and it's causing a flooded condition.  Check your float bowl for dirt and debris and clean the needle and seat.

The plug was definitely carbon fouled. I put a new plug in and got it to run for a few seconds and that plug was carbon covered. I am gonna check the carb tomorrow when I can and let you know how the carb is

In my (mostly two stroke) excessive carbon is related to oil consumption more than fuel and wet fouled plugs are fuel related.  Your looking for something that could have changed suddenly, like a sticking float or maybe a ring cracked allowing more oil to blow by all the sudden.

I would rule out the fuel issue first.  You may want to drain the oil as well and make sure it's not filled with gas.

You might want to check the float in the carb for a hole .

I'm not positive if this is the cause but when I took the float bowl off the pilot just was sitting in the bottom
