Bad soleniod?
04/08/17 at 16:20:27

I tried starting my bike(with new battery) and I hear a click from the solenoid and a click from the starter. But when I hold the button down I hear a high pitched squeal and see fumes go from my positive solenoid lead. I have no Idea what to do, I did what the manual says to check the solenoid and it was fine, I checked the starter also and it was fine, I have no idea where to begin to look for the problem. please help

Have you taken anything off? Starter?
I'd probably jump straight to the starter. Get cables, ground somewhere and clip on the hot wire on the starter.
If it's not stabilized, it could roll.
Be in neutral, car not running.

Were you doing any other work just prior that could cause the engine/tranny to lock up?

Have you done anything using tools just before the problem started?

1. you checked the bat and it had 12 something volts?
and you pushed the starter button and it still read 12 something volts?
2. you checked the starter and it was there with a wire hooked up to it?
or you hooked an ohm meter to it and it read a couple of ohms?
or you pulled it out and hooked a battery to it and it went whir?

You got any teeth left or should I go on?

Doing some research apparently what I have been calling the solenoid is actually the starter relay.

As a general rule, when things start making smoke, I stop pushing buttons.

If your starter solenoid wasn't fried, it probably is now.

Have you had the stator cover off?

If not, then we need to check the decomp and the starter.
The 1st click is the decomp, the second is the relay.
get yourself in a position where you can push the button and see the decomp arm on the head.
Might be hard if you still have the chrome covers.
You can operate this lever by hand and will go easy until it hits the rocker, then it gets real hard.
Do this once to see how far it has to go to hit the rocker and remember it has to go farther when you push the button.

It only goes for a half second so, don't blink.  OK, give it a shot.
