Trick Speedo

Is it possible to run the speedometer backwards by connecting the drive end to a drill motor and take miles off the clock? I'm asking because the secondhand motorcycle I'm working on is in such bad shape to have only 9,300 miles. I got the difference between hard miles and easy miles. But, I just opened the clutch cover and that cam chainadjuster is way past it's "allowable" limit. I'll followup with photos once I figure out exactly how to correctly measure the cam chain adjuster. More later.

I don't know if it's legal but you could run it forwards (with a drill or small electric motor) and take it over the 0 mark up to whatever mileage you want it to say.

There's no problem that a full tank of gas and a sunny day can't fix!

Naw, they disengage going backward.
So you can't take miles off without taking off the glass.

Why I'm thinking the speedometer has been messed with is, after removing the exhaust pipe, the exhaust port is thick with carbon and the valve stems are coated white. The cam chain tensioner is past its limit. The oil filter was filthy, but not metal or dangling bits. Front brake pads well worn. The rear brake is stuck, so I don't know it's overall condition.

However, no oil leaks.

I'd push the Mighty Savage all the home before I'd hurt the engine any further.

Verslagen1, I just sent you an email asking if you can fix me up with the Verslavy mod.
I'll work on the rear brake in the meantime.

That's not normal wear for under ten thousand miles. Maybe he never changed the oil.

Good grief! I'm looking at 25mm! I pulled the adjuster and there doesn't appear to be any damage, e.g. ovalling, or missing or broken springs, pins or part.

There was only 1/2 quart oil in the crankcase when I aquirred the motorcycle.

Some may think this is a parts bike or just another money pit and you'd be right. But, the thing wants to run, and I'm here to see that does.

If it'll rescue, give it a chance.

there is a chance that they put in a used engine after the original blew.
check the engine number against the registration.
also check it against the listing in the vin number post in the tech section.

All numbers checked out before aquisition. Trust, but verify.

I never knew what an optimist Verslagen really is. I would not expect it make that first mile.
