I got grounded...
04/07/17 at 07:22:49

So I was trying to do the honorable thing working on a push mower for my new tenant that is moving into my rental house next week. Single mother that wants to try and cut the grass herself and last tenants left a mower that was in decent working order but clearly not kept up.  I did the obvious oil change and new spark plug, cleaned the carb, exposed the needle to adjust the carb a bit richer (suck on that EPA!), fixed the self-propelling mechanism.

After all that, could not get the darn thing to crank for the life of me. Checked all electrical connections and wasn't getting fire. Took the top apart to check and clean the magneto. Put it all back  together. NOTHING. How could this be...it was running before I started working on it so what happened?

I got to looking around the ground wire/safety switch and noticed that there were two wires splitting out of the wire loom and one of them went to the rear of the mower ducking under the cowling up around the bagger chute.

I'll be danged if there was a little mechanism that detects either the bag or the chute plug (for mulching) and the metal bar on either of those two that sits down in the latch completes the circuit, and without either the bag or chute plug I guess it grounds out the magneto and you get no sparky.

Threw the bag back on it, and VROOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMM!   Shocked

Aren't these little safety switches wonderfu!? Huh

My mother has a Cub Cadet tractor with a safety switch in the seat.  The idea is that if you get off the tractor seat....the blades in the mower stop turning so you can't hurt yourself.

The problem is that my mother's yard isn't perfectly flat, and there are some bumps in the yard.  When you are mowing and hit a bump....it can cause a bit of your weight to come off the seat - and that is often enough to trip the safety switch and turn off the mower blades.....so you have to stop....back up......turn the mower clutch back on....then go over the missed spot again.  It is pretty aggravating as it happens a lot (I would disable the switch - but I would feel really badly if my mother got hurt as a result).

My husqvarna rider is the same way. I lean over to grab a stick or trash and it's just enough rise in the seat to trip the switch.  I get it...but dang it is annoying.

Grab the brake light switch off of the savage... it has overtravel built into it.
Adjust the switch so it's only activated when she gets off.

Don't laugh, that  has happened to a few of the Dragon boys when they accidentally broke their bike a little bit while up on a trip --- and I can't laugh as mine grounded me for the entire time my daughter was born until she graduated from college.

Then she bought me my Savage as a thank you.

(I do love her, she's a peach)

My gas trimmer was working fine.....
I shut it off to go have lunch.
A few hours later I tried to start it, nothing....
I pulled the air cleaner, etc, gave it a shot of fluid, pulled, pulled, pulled....

NOTHING........

I chilled trying to catch my breath from having pulled like I was raping this little machine and I noticed, yep, a On - off switch, right where I turned it off to go have lunch.

My sign is permanent  Grin

My fix for a gas trimmer is to buy an electric one. Mine never lasted for more than 2 years or so. I got tired of pulling the string and started to plug 'em in!  Wink

Funny you say that.  I have a an old 48" commercial mower I got used off a landscaper.  It was half wore out but had a new Kawasaki motor on it.  I've been using for 19 years.  I've replaced a couple belts, a set of tires and changed the oil once (literally).   No grease, nothing.

It starts on the first pull everytime!   Shocked

And rightfully so. The blasted things eat into our fishing time and riding time and just sitting in the shade time. I'm just not feeling the love when I park that thing...
Nothing about the mower beckons me to go rub and wipe and clean.
