Cylinder head removal/Cam chain guides replacement
04/04/17 at 15:00:44

I broke a cam chain and the guides are rough so I'm replacing them.  Has anybody posted a simple way to pop off the top section of the cylinder head with out damaging fins?  Hoping for a little insight here. Thanks.

The cylinder head cover usually comes off pretty easy.....once you have discovered the 2 bolts that reside just inside the valve cover access caps.

Mine seems a bit tenacious.  Perhaps I missed one bolt and nut. I'll have to put my glasses on.  What happens if I run the starter to turn it over? wont the piston force the issue, or would it be asking for trouble?

Maybe I got confused.....are you taking the head cover off...or the cylinder head?

If it is the cylinder head - look for the 2 nuts (1 front - 1 back) hiding under the intake and exhaust ports.

My bad,  Its the cylinder head,  so I can get the cam chain guides replaced. Those buggers are about 100 bucks between the 2 of them.  fortunately I found a used set on ebay for 33.

I figured, I was intending to use my existing ones again until they were beat up by a failing adjuster and breaking chain.  But I see your point, 33 bucks later.

The front guide is straight and usually see's very little wear... and requires you to remove the head to replace.

The rear guide see's most of the wear, the plastic does develop cracks and in 1 case has shed off the steel support clogging the oil pump.
Also, it can be replaced (with determination) from below.
