Today I got a chance to measure the axle movement changing pulleys.
25 tooth front pulley with stock 68 tooth rear pulley = moves the axle FORWARD 5mm from stock. (23 x 68)
25 tooth front pulley with 65 tooth rear pulley = moves the axle TO THE REAR 6mm from stock.
The final drive ratios are =
23 x 68 = 2.98 to 1
25 x 68 = 2.72 to 1
25 x 65 = 2.60 to 1
Remember, the stock speedo runs off the output shaft of the tranny. If you change the final drive AND OR the size of your rear tire you are messing with the speedo accuracy. Having said that, most folks say their stock speedo is off anyway. Download a GPS speedo app for your phone and use some cardboard and duct tape to mount it over your handlebar clamps and check the stock speedo before and after. You can use some white tape to cover the numbers and waterproof marker to make new ones.
After changing both pulleys and a 150/90 15 rear tire I went 100 miles on the stocker and the GPS said 123!
23% off, at 50 indicated I was really going 62!
Now at 60 I am only turning 3400 rpm vs 4100 stock. 4100 now pushes me along at 72.
Did I loose some quick acceleration, yes. But now it is very happy on the SS at 65 - 70 all day.
Look at your bike like clay or just raw material you can mold to suit YOUR needs. You can build a bobber for bar hopping or short rides, a cafe bike for carving the twisties, or even a little bagger like mine for long trips. Too many people buy a bike on looks or price without planning what they want to do with it, then whine when it won't do everything perfect for them.

I was able to get this installed in about 2.5 hours with the help of my Dad who also knows next to nothing about bikes...just needed that old man intuition. It's definitely a 2-man job if you're doing this in the backyard using cinderblocks as lifts.

We didn't need to file down any of the belt covers, only that elbow joint so the pulley fits with enough space. At first I thought we needed to after hearing some scraping, but I forgot a rubber casket on the pulley case. Putting that back in fixed the problem.

The hardest part was getting the darn pulley on with the belt. It took some wiggling, cussing, and a little bang from a rubber mallet to get it on.

Remember to put your bike in neutral!!

If you ever do it again....it will go much faster.  With a proper jack, impact wrench, a dremel, and 4 - 5 previous conversions for practice......you can get it done it 30 minutes!

Anxious to hear your ride report...remember that your speedometer will not be reading your true speed anymore.  Check it with a GPS to find out how fast you are really going.

I will be able to get some machined in January.  The next few weeks are just too hectic for me to spend any time in the garage at the lathe  The holidays and my upcoming retirement have me just too busy in December - I will be working half as many hours once January has arrived.

I have been able to buy enough pulleys from eBay this summer to keep me busy at the lathe this winter.....I expect that by mid-January I will be able to start making the pulleys and get some ready for those who want them.

The rear pulley to buy is a Kawasaki KZ750 pulley.  It is not a bolt on and it has to be drilled for the different mounting bolt circle of the LS650 pulley hub, and the pulley hub needs a spacer made and the mounting surface needs to be machined to provide for the different offset of the Kawasaki Pulley.  The rear shock mount also needs to be cut down to provide for clearance for the pulley.  I have an extra that I have machined, and I also machine a bushing to prevent the "pulley wobble" and wear on the pulley hub bearing.  I will have to think a bit about what I would need to charge for this.....it most lilkey requires 4 hours of my time to get all this work done....plus the price of the pulley, shock bolt, new pulley hub bearing and brass for the pushing.

Here is a link to the thread on the front and rear pulley process.

Here is a link to a rear pulley on eBay.  If you are going to do the work yourself this is a pretty common price for one - they seem to come up for sale once or twice a year.  (If you want to buy mine....I already have one that has been converted).

OK......it snowed on Friday and got really cold - so I locked myself in the garage and ignored the wife and dog for 2 days and got a batch of pulleys done.

If you want one.....I have 5 that can be shipped out as soon as I get the short head screws for the oil seal retainer (I am out of those).  The pulleys would most likely ship the next day after you pay.

If you want one - send $165 to PayPal at:dwhitacre@cardinalengineering.net

Don't forget to send me your mailing address.

If you want to pay by check....send $160.
