I am sure this is a common problem but I did a search and did not find anything. I have yet to get down a try to figure out the problem as it is still cold out in the shop. This is a new used bike and I have yet to even ride it. Already changed the petcock as recommended and would like to get this oil leak fixed if it is not a major problem.

Have you recently oiled your drive belt  ?  

I vote for you to try tightening the footpeg through bolts first.....wouldn't hurt anything to know those are tight anyhow.

If they are loose and you get some tightening done......it will take a few days for the drip to stop, as there will be some oil around the bolts that will drip out even if the tightening stops the ooze.

Thanks fellas.....I haven't seen any leaks up in the normal visual range. Everything up high looks clean. I have yet to even ride this fine machine so no lubing of anything yet. I have been watching WalMart for the 10w50 oil that has been recommended. I intend to change the oil/filter before riding as well as the rear bald tire. I will put the torque wrench on the bolts recommended above and start there.

If aforementioned bolts are to spec (don't just tighten them, they get torqued to 51-64 ft-lbs) then I would examine the counter shaft as there is a seal in that location. You'll have to remove the pulley to get a good view.

just as a follow up...... I first decided to tighten the two bolts thru the foot peg bracket as suggested. The first thing I found was that someone had put some sort of hard sealer around the lowest bolt head on the left side and I had to use a small chisel to break it off before I could put a socket on the bolt. Neither of the two bolts were any where near 50ft lb....both were less than 20#. I don't know for sure yet if the leak is fixed but I would say that there is a good chance that it is.
