some advice on which bike to buy

Hi folks! I had to sell my Savage back in 2014 because we moved to Ecuador (South America) and I have just now saved enough money to buy a new bike down here. There are no Savages on the market, and used bikes are expensive, especially Japanese. The two best bikes I have found in my price range are: Honda xr250 "tornado" 2011 with only 5,000 km and good off road capabilities. The other bike is a 2010 Suzuki GS500 with 16,000km but a few hundred bucks more. I am wondering which one you all would prefer and why......

What is the market, parts and service like on the Royal Enfield down there?

I bought a GS500 2010 model with 15,000,kms on the clock, I also have an S40 2015 model that I bought with 800kms on the clock.

Apart from the riding position, the GS has all the same advantages as the S40, easy to service and bullet proof. Maybe even more bulletproof than the S40.

I really like fanging around on the S40 but when I get back on the GS500 I'm glad I have it. They are both 30 year old designs and as such they are well looked after in both advice forums and spare parts. I would not hesitate to recommend the GS. You'll get twice the distance on the GS as the S40 due to double the size of the tank. In the 18 months I've had the GS, it has never ever failed to start instantly no matter the weather.

Thanks guys for the great advice. I really liked the GS500 (especially the sound and feel of it) but went with the Honda 250 because of its versatility. As Dave mentioned the roads are a big consideration and most of the roads here are crap. I can rarely see myself going over 55mph.

I was interested in Royal Enfield... they had a dealer here but they went out of business. All the cops here ride Hondas so there are tons of spare parts.

Good Luck to you! Honda is always a good choice. Just aside, I visited Ecuador last summer. Guayaquil (sp?) and the Galapagos Islands. Love the people and the country; hate the heat, humidity and bugs. I was surprised to find a huge American community there. Some of the folks live there quite comfortably on just their Social Security (no MEDICARE, of course). Watch out for the EE-WAN-AHS (Iguanas to us yanks) some can climb trees and pee on you! And what about those Sacagawea Dollars?
