Light smoke coming from cylinder head cover
02/20/17 at 14:05:45
I was working on my fuel/air mixture today when I noticed some light grey/white smoke coming out of the cylinder head. What could this be? I had also just changed the oil the day before

Where on the head? Right Front corner? Blowby tube secure?
Check it out, check oil level, ride as long as it's not getting worse or making scary noises.
A few drops of oil should burn off pretty quick.
How long did it do that?

From inside the head or outside? Maybe you spilled a few drops?

There's no problem that a full tank of gas and a sunny day can't fix!

Could it be coming from the exhaust flange?

You might want remove the intake valve inspection cover ,make sure the O-ring gasket is in it's grove in the cover and is undamaged. If the leak seems to be near the bottom of the head you might look at the nut on the headbolt dead center under the carb, as these have been know to weep.

The top of the engine can leak oil in several places, and the wind while riding can blow the oil around and make it difficult to trace the source. Known oil leak areas are the head plug - which is located in the front right side of the cylinder, in the cavity behind the exhaust header flange. Another spot that can leak is the copper washer on the left front cylinder stud - the drain for the head goes around this stud and if the soft washer got scratched when the head was torqued, it can allow oil to leak. The sealant on the head cover can also begin to leak just above the spark plug - you have to remove he head cover and clean everything up and apply new sealant if this area is leaking. As as mentioned, look at the valve inspection caps to see if they are leaking.
The best thing for you to do is take the tank off, remove the chrome cylinder head cap covers, and start looking for an oil leak.

Since the Speedo cable will stay on the tank, and you don't want to kink it, prepare a place to set the tank before you pull it off. Yeah, go ahead, ask how I know..

And the O-ring likes to fall out of the end of the cable.

And it Will hide and they have an established history of either exactly matching their background color, going transparent or simply turning into a vapor, never to be seen again.
You can ask me about that one, too, if you'd like.
Having both hands busy with a tank I Really don't want to drop, hunting a Safe and stable place to park it and not kink the cable ended in putting it Back on the bike well enough to feel safe walking away..

Ok I need some help with this as well! I bought a 97 savage a few weeks ago and also noticed some smoke coming from the header. Now, there seems to be a lot of (oil?) covering the front of the engine. I read a lot about the plug/cap leak from the headcover and think thats probably the cause. Before I take everything apart, what do you think?

It's possible it's the head plug, but you need to remove those pretty covers and give her a good clean then watch carefully where the leak starts showing it's ugly head.

Looks like mine after I rode it for a week. The guy had it cleaned up really nice when I bought it but I could detect a bit of oil on the cylinder. After a few rides it was all over and blowing all the way back to the side covers.
Replace the plug and you'll be good.
