Bike Wont Start - No Lights
01/26/17 at 23:00:10

I parked my bike about a month ago do to a slight fall whre  the front left signal broke.

When I finally fixed it, my bike didn't start, and I mean no lights noghitn.

I put in a new battery https://www.batteriesplus.com/battery/motorcycle/suzuki/boulevard-s40/650cc/2...

Bike still won't turn on, no lights, nothing. Battery tested volts at about 12.7 so that seems right, unless I'm getting all this wrong.

If I'm correct the troubleshoot section says it can be bad contacts.
http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1403194022/0#2

2 thigns to consider

1. when fixing the signal i took off the headlight...could that have created a bad contact?

2. I think i accidently left the kill switch on during the month I parked it. (how i did this i dont know, but I want to say it was set to on when i got to work on the signal light.

Can any of this created anything I'm not finding? The bike was fine until the battery sat alone for am onth. Noobie me didnt trickle charge it.

I wanted to.  I came home after work, wit ha brand new battery.

No lights no sound. Being that I'm not that knowledgable on bikes... I took the meter and i got the voltage of 12.7 with the battery hooked up.

So I connected my charger to the trickle cables I added... the battery is hooked up to the bike as we speak.

If you parked it with the kill switch on.....that is not a problem as long as you had the ignition turned off.

If you left the key in the On position and it stayed that way until the battery ran down - that can be a problem for the ignition module.....but your lights should still be working.

Check your fuses.

Start with the fuses for sure.

Did the bike run after the fall?

If not then you would want to be sure you didn't damage one of the safety switches (clutch, neutral, kick stand).  If it was running when you parked it, go back into the headlight and see what you messed up.  Wink

While your in the head light make sure you connected the turn signal wires correctly(if not that could cause a blown fuse)

Charging a battery with 12.7 volts on it doesn't make sense.

Bike dropped.
Bike running, parked,
A month later, would it even TRY to start before you fixed it?

Check the connectors to the controls under the tank.
sometimes a fall will pull on the cables.

Probably somewhere else, but can you let me know just where the fuses are located?  I found a spare in my "tool kit" box, but have no idea where to look if I needed to find on the bike.

Was there a splattered look to the fuse guts? Pretty rare for one to just die. High current flow slings bits and pieces of the fuses guts around. That's caused by an electrical problem. As we al know, the definition of an electrical problem is any problem that can't be solved with a hammer.

Fixed!

And you won't believe what it was.

In short, the signal light I was replacing it with, had a longer screw. I didn't notice because the the original screw stripped on me.  I was going to replace the entire signal compartment, but ended just doing the orange cap. When I put the new screw in I was also smashing the cables and I had the blow fuse.

I disassembled everything I had done, and the lights came on. So I started putting one screw at a time and turning the key to see if the fuse will blow up.

When I found the screw, I checked the original, (thank goodness I kept it)  because I noticed the difference.

I'm back riding. THANK YOU GUYS!

Now I can take it for a ride, drain the oil and send the cam tensioner to versy. FINALLY!

I did almost the exact same thing when I relocated my turn signals. I thought the thread on the turn signal housing had a sealed end on it so I screwed the bolt in snug ( my bracket was thinner than the fender rail). It pinched one of the wires.

It created a really weird situation where the turn signals would work if I plugged in one at a time, but only one worked if I plugged them both in.

I'm still annoyed I had to pay an auto-electrician to find it, on a mod that should have cost basically nothing. Was kicking myself for a week!
