What do these tubes do on the back of the carb?

Hey guys,

What do these two tubes do on the back of the carb (bottom of the picture). Are they breather tubes?

Mine are poked up into a little cavity in the frame. I am wondering if that restricts them in doing their job.

Thanks for your patience with this newbie question  Cool

They are vents for the float bowl chamber.

I have often wondered why they are arranged in that position.  Most pre-EPA carbs would have the vent tubes routed downward, and if the bike tipped over the fuel would flow out of the tubes under the engine.  If the Savage tips over the fuel flows out the tubes and into the frame under the fuel tank, and when you tip it back upright the fuel flows out of the frame and onto the top of the engine case.

I suppose this is just another reason that you should not let your bike fall over! Shocked

That's why I cut mine back to about 3'' I didn't want fuel dripping on my hot motor.

I'll add that to my "reasons not to crash" list!
