HELP please
01/03/17 at 13:31:16

Hi
I recently purchased a 1989 sl 400, the last owner keeped in extremely good condition it's only dun 55000 Km (I'm a kiwi so everything is in Merrick) And as far as I know there have been no mode dun to this bike bond a windscreen.
I went to go for a ride today, but what I went to start it the engine didn't kick over and the starter motor won't shut off with the kill switch or by the off position with the key. So I've removed to power cord the the starter but whenever I attach it. it's still running current and the starter begins to crank agent even when everything is in the off position.  :'(
Has this happened to anyone else/what do you all think is causing this?
I think it's shorting somewhere but I don't know where to start looking?

Your starter relay is probably stuck... (it's under the seat, big wires run to it))...
You can try smacking it with a screwdriver handle,... this will sometimes get the contact points to release... if not, or if it happens again, you'll need to get a new one.
I just replaced mine,... cost was around $10 US...

Refresh my memory.  Do these have a separate starter relay, or is it incorporated into the starter?

(Never mind  Roll Eyes )

I'm pretty sure it's sepreit and is sitting under the seat
It's starting properly now I'm going to look for the part
If anyone has a part number it will be much appreciated as I don't have an owners manual yet

You may not find part numbers in the manual.
Here is the Suzuki PN from ronayers.com

2002 - Silver (Thumper)
2000 - Green (Mad Hamish)
Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut between the seat and the handlebars. Make sure yours isn't too tight or too loose.

Do a search on Amazon, EBay or other site to get a better price.

Serowbot,

Will the relay you show above work with a 2013 S40?

The seller has fitment as 1995 t0 2002.

I think I answered my own question, after searching I found this listed:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/220923667001

Dangit' Kenny... and that one's even cheaper!... Cool

Really,.. relays are relays...  as long as they handle the amperage, any will work.
If you ever look inside a relay, it's just a set of contact points, like an old school distributor... a small electrical charge closes the points, and that allows the higher amperage to pass.  (saves running a battery cable to the handlebar and back)... Grin...

Bot,

I think the next time I have something to order from eBay I am going to order one just to have it around for when I may need it. I don't think we will ever find one any cheaper.....

How I found the cheap one was searching eBay with the part number from Ron Ayers where the price is $70.34.....
