Oil change mess

Does anyone have any tips or tricks that they use to keep the oil from absolutely covering the exhaust when you take the filter cover off?

I have a Ryca kit on mine so the heat shield is gone. I'm assuming that actually made the problem worse on stock bikes because the oil probably drips behind it.

Either way, I would normally throw a piece of plastic or something like that under the oil drip to divert it to a pan. I don't see that working too well with this design because of the angle that you need to have it at to catch anything. You need a second drip edge along the left side or you're just going to end up with oil farther down the exhaust...which doesn't really fix the situation.

If you want to change the oil with a warm engine, drain the sump while the engine is warm - but let it cool off a bit before you change the filter.  You can used some 3" wide masking tape and create a drain trough for the oil from the filter so it can flow over the exhaust and down to your container.  I apply a piece sticky side up underneath the filter cover, and form it to flow over the pipe at the bottom.  A few extra pieces of tape at the bottom help direct it where you want it.

I've tried foil over the header with marginal success.

best thing so far is to wash the bike after.   Cool

Drain the oil, then lay the bike on it's left side before you remove the filter cover.
I know it's a PITA, but it makes it a lot less messy.

Oh yea, your oil level looks low.

I'll try this next time. Smiley

And don't worry. It has enough now.

I bent a piece of copper flashing to go over the pipe, somewhat like verslagen's idea, works fine. On my Toyota Tacoma, I have the same situation: when I remove the oil filter, it drips oil all over the control arm and frame . So I basically came up with the same idea years ago and fabricated a small trough which drips into the waste pan below. Copper is easy to work with and can be picked up usually for free on construction sites.
