What is this and how do I get this off?  I've tried steel wool, polishing and rubbing compound, buffing with drill, and scrubbing.  Anything I'm forgetting?

By the way, that's after I scrubbed with all the above.

Please tell me that's not the clear coat.  That means I'll have to strip it down to bare metal and polish.  That could take a while...oh well I guess I needed a long term project.

That looks like the clear coat or the aluminium is pitted.  I remember a thread about this.   Search the forum with those keywords.  I prefer the Google and adding site:suzukisavage.com

Yep, that's clear coat and there is corrosion forming underneath

And.....the corrosion gets pretty deep when you see the white turn to black.

Do you live near the ocean and salt air?

If you strip the clear coat, and then polish....you will have to polish it regularly to keep it from corroding again - especially if the bike gets wet often.

Yes. I did just that to the left side(stator) cover on my bike. It looked pretty bad when I bought the bike. Lot of black spiderwebs under the clear coat.

I used VHT brand Strip Fast, polished the cover with Mother's Mag and Aluminum Polish. and then resprayed it with VHT clear Engine enamel. That was a couple of years ago and it still looks fine.

The most time consuming part was the polishing because I did it by hand. A little buffing wheel would probably have worked and been faster but I don't have one.

I used a small orbital sander and 3M Green Scrubby pads and a spray bottle of water on the engine side covers.. worked great.

Thanks for the tips guys.  I might have a need for a "factory like finish" on my project.

I shot clear on it. Looked great.
If you have a small orbital, hit something with it and look at the pattern. You might be happier with a chemical strip.
Cheap, rattle can clear isn't the same as automotive.
Some guys here can point you right. Not me..

I don't live anywhere close to the ocean or salt air.  I was thinking of maybe getting them powder coated.

I tell people Longview, but I have a Gilmer address, but, I can be to the Longview mall in half the time it takes to get to Gilmer, and once In Gilmer, you pretty much need to go to Longview if you want more than groceries, hardware or a veterinarian.
I went to Shreveport the Saturday the time changed. Played some Beer Pong, maybe the world's most unsanitary publicly played game.
