Airbox drain tube
11/24/16 at 13:37:39

So I've had my bike for about 2 years now, and in that time ive put on about 17xxx miles and some one mentioned an airbox drain tube with a cap at the end of it, I checked my bike and it was not there, should I worry about it or leave it the way it is. Also, where could I get another plug?

Happy thanksgiving by the way everyone.

2 quick questions:

Did you buy the bike new or used?

Have any modifications been made to the airbox/filter?

Will try to get a good photo for you.

Air box and filter are stock, no mods, I replaced the filter about a year ago with a hiflofiltro (stock style) and I bought the Bike used with 1200 miles on it.

I removed the front pulley cover and took this photo. On the left side of the bike at about the 4-5 o'clock position from front drive belt pulley, you'll see a hose with plug.

Let me know if pic came through ok.

I see the picture now, my bike doesn't have it. However I might be able to rob one off of my old honda.

First one of these drains (aka "puke tube") I encountered was on my '82 Honda CM450C.

You can see an exploded diagram on BikeBandit. Put in your bike's info for OEM parts, select "fuel & air," then "air cleaner." (Item #13, I think, for the drain tube assembly).

IIRC, the hose is downstream of the air filter, so unfiltered air is going into the airbox through the hole.
Also, the stuff that pours out of that drain is really toxic.

@Armen:

I think you're right about the drain tube being "downstream" from the air filter element, as is the tube which runs from the engine to the top of the airbox. If memory serves, it's an emmisions control that routes crankcase vapors to the combustion chamber rather than to the atmosphere, similar in function to the EGR systems on automobiles.

I don't know about toxicity, however. The drainage would be a combination of oil mist, condensation,  and combustion by-products.

Roger,
FWIW, when I worked at a Honda dealer in the '70s, they sent out a service bulletin saying that crap was the most carcinogenic stuff in the bike. Nitrile gloves are your friend  Wink

The breather hose on top of the motor routes fumes to the airbox, hopefully to be burned. The stuff that condenses sits on the bottom of the airbox and ends up in that tube.

Thanks for the heads-up, Armen. I recently did the break-in service on my S40, including pulling the plug on that drain tube. Nothing drained, but will get some nitrile gloves at Harb Freight.
