Air filter mod questions
11/19/16 at 14:00:03

Ok, guys I deleted my air box last night and i'm planning to do the K&N mod. Question though. Is there a big difference between the K&N pancake filter and the Ryca version. Other than a $20 price drop, and that iconic red looking K&N filter?

Also, I've read that i'm going to have to relocate my battery (I want the filter attached directly to the carburator.

Does the Pancake style offer better airflow than the cone? While i'm doing this mod is there any other mods that i need to do since i'm already here?

The pancake offers worse flow than the cone, as the air must make a hard 90 degree turn.

Worst thing you could do.  The cv carb likes straight air flow.
Best to have a length as long as the stock rubber ducky.
And don't close off the eye brow port with a cheap cone filter.

So what set up would you recommend? I'm new to this so as best description as possible.

The longer intake hose promotes low end torque. Shorter hose = more top end.

intake tuning theory

Search term

There have been some pretty interesting posts on it here.

There really is a reason why the straw that comes in a malt is bigger.

The volume of air between the filter and carb matters.

If slapping a cone filter on the carb was
Instant horsepower
Wouldn't manufacturers save the cost of the airbox?

JOG the title of that thread was

Tune your intake

I'm still messing with it and I can move my peak torque up or down in the rpm range by changing runner length. Got a killer mid range right now ! Smiley

FYI: the K&N that works for me is RC-1250 cone. Cool

You need to build a runner that changes length.

It acts like a plenum in an intake made for multiple cylinder engines. It gives the engine something to breathe from instead of trying to constantly suck air through the filter. Much more efficient with a plenum.

I started "tune your intake "post and it was a real education, thanks to those members that knew much more about it than I. Anyone thinking a cone filter mounted directly to the carb is a performance move really needs to check it out!

Thanks Batman,I have done hours of math and hours of R&D. Changing runner length ,different air filters, different jetting over & over. It's just about dialed but I have another engine mod to do and when that's done I'll be ready to settle in with a runner length & air filter that work well !
Right now it has some crazy power in mid range at peak torque.
And I can move up & down rpm range , what fun ! Thanks to all that posted !

Ported head ,minor on intake, major to severe on exhaust-Me
Removed all sharp edges from combustion chamber-Me
Webcam Std grind cam has little more lift & duration than stock cam & hard faced rockers
2" header with a repackable baffle with 2 crumb cups,might remove 1
Mikuni vm36 with UFO,Quad Flow Wing,Dialajet-Lancer & Thunder Products
Carb heat shield, keeps hot air off carb mainly floatbowl area

JOG , At one point I did have a cardboard and a plastic tube , one inside the other with air filter at the end held together with electrical tape and duct taped to side of the bike, but the contraption wound up being too long even at its shortest. Found that its only a matter of 4 to 10" , I can't go any shorter than 4" due to needing a elbow to get around battery box,
RYCA battery box. From short to long or long to short, different filters affects jetting too , lots of variables , lots of time !
