Gas tank paint around petcock
10/25/16 at 10:42:26
Hi,
I'm in the process of overhauling my '93 Savage, which due to a lot of rust on the rear fender will include a paint job.
I'm still somewhat undecided on whether I want to do the paint job myself (tried it before a long time ago), and am in doubt on how to handle the area around the petcock properly with regards to painting.
Any tips'n'tricks are most welcome...
Currently it looks like this:

I would mask off the exact area that the petcock covers. When I put the Raptor petcock on my bike I cleaned the paint off that area.
Hope this helps.

The paint at the petcock and filler neck are tough to keep form dissolving as they are constantly subject to the fuel. Even 2K and epoxy paints will eventually come off....and as you can see it even happens to the factory paint over time.
Luckily the rubber O-ring at the petcock still seals, even if there is some paint peeling and some attached.
If you want a durable finish - you can't use single stage spray cans on the fuel tank. You have to use a 2K paint. I don't bother to mask off the paint around the petcock.....I just paint the area and expect that over time the paint will come off.

Thank for tips to all... It makes good sense, but you never know if there's some secret trick.
It's not the original color, as below the red I can see some purple paint.
The handle bar is a "tracker" handle bar, that I found cheap. It's slightly too wide for wrist comfort, but it gives me a comfortable sitting position that My back likes... and then I also like the looks of it a lot.
I intend to take off a centimeter or two off both ends though, as I think that will do wonders for my wrist.

That might be information I could use someday.

I would think they would like narrow bars... Easier to drive with cuffs.

Thanks......my bars are much narrower (clip-ons). It took me a surprisingly long while to realize that the reason my bike seems to steer a bit "stiff" - is that narrow bars don't give very much leverage!
