Can't relate
10/06/16 at 11:59:56

A buddy of mine parks his bikes ($225 per bike per month, times about 5 bikes) at the garage I work out of in NYC. He does high end apartment and office renovations and mods.
Asked him if he had any interesting projects lately.
Mentions doing a musician's apartment who's albums I've owned for years.
Said he just did a high end kitchen reno for someone's Manhattan apt.
So, I asks, how High is High end?
Take a wild guess, he says.
So, keeping in mind that the average 1 Bedroom apt sold for $1 million dollars in NYC last year, I take a wild guess of $250,000.
He smiles.
Double that, he says.
And add $80K.
????
$580,000 for a kitchen renovation in an apartment!?!?!?
Yup.
Me being the peasant that I am, I can't even begin to think of what is involved, so I ask.
Well, $40K for the stove, and then the other appliances, brings the appliance total to $100K.
Then the stonework,
Then the custom knobs and fixtures.
And
And
And...
As a reference point, he has a crew of 24 guys who he keeps very busy with this kind of work.
Reminds me that in this town, I'm white trash.

I could spend a day, maybe three, weighing and considering all of that...
But, I'm gonna just go with
I can't relate.

Some people, "trophy consumption" is what makes them feel important and successful. Good luck to them. Whatever makes their empty lives fulfilling.

I could do the whole kitchen for what they got for the oven.
Wall, ceiling, floors scraped clean.
Throw everything out and start from scratch.

I did mine in the spring. I did most everything but electrical and plumbing. I think we ended up a little under $20k with all new flooring, cabinets, counter tops, appliances, and fixtures. I don't feel like we really held back on anything other than the price of the cabinets since we got them from Ikea.

I didn't even know that there were $40k stoves. I would imagine that's even more than top of the line commercial stoves.

For $40,000.00 a stove better come up with the menu, do the shopping, cook unsupervised, and always be right.
Two stoves equal a decent little house? HOW?

You are missing the point. It's not about how little you can get it done for, it's how out of control you can be.
My cousin is a Teamster doing construction in the city. His company just did one of the buildings on 'Billionaire's Row' in Mid-town. Almost 100 stories. Penthouse was a few floors and went for something like $60+ million. All the other units were $7-9 million, and were sold before the place was finished.
Because the units were all cookie cutter apartments (same floor plans), most of the buyers had guys like my bud lined up before they even set foot in the place to move walls, throw away fixtures, etc, and 'personalize' their places.
These are the folks Bernie Sanders was ranting about.
Another guy whose bikes I work on tells me he does investing for the one percent. Their two biggest priorities are big returns and no income taxes. Tells me he did a portfolio for one of his customers that made $18 million in the last 5 years. And the guy paid no taxes.
These are the folks that own Hillary and Trump and most of the government.
They don't want to know that you could do your kitchen for chump change.

Hope you are kidding.
A person who makes a few hundred times as much as me, paying no taxes (while I pay lots), throwing out crumbs to the working slobs.
Not exactly the whole concept of everyone paying their fair share.
And it's not likely to get better.

Ridiculous!

I say flat tax for everyone. Plain and simple. No exemptions. No favors. No paying too little or too much now and jockeying with the H&R Block guys to beat the system for a refund. So much fraud in the whole refund game. You pay your fair share out of every paycheck and move on to the next one...no looking back.

Yep. some of my family (my sis especially) work pretty good jobs in healthcare industry, being paid by the government and do everything they can to avoid paying tax, while screaming they don't have the resources they need to do their jobs. WTH? Then she spends 1 mil building a trophy house out of all proportion to her needs and complains she can't afford to have everything just the way she wants. Had to cut back on the guest accommodation. Poor thing, still got the $20,000 benchtops. :'(
Sorry for the rant, Armen. You touched a sore point. Needs v wants and all that.

Seems a bit odd for a person to want someone to trickle on them...

Oooooh! Rich people!... I hope they trickle on me!...  Huh
