If the slop you are describing is "rotation", there is not much you can do except buy new cushions for the older bike....although I suppose you could install some shims.

If the slop you are talking about is "wobble", where the pulley can be wiggled by grabbing the front and rear of the pulley and wiggling it - that is an indication the pulley hub bearing is getting worn.  You can make that better by doing the floor matt fix.
