Any tips for taking the bad boy apart?

Not before you get jumper cables, a good battery, good ground, and go straight to the starter with the hot side.
Prove that starter motor has a problem.
If you don't know how to take it apart, odds of getting it back together are greatly diminished.

I don't know what voltage the starter motor is getting when you hit the start button.
Do you?

Translation - You need to read what has been posted, take the advice, and try the recommended tests - before you post more questions (or randomly take the starter apart).

I don't think the issue has anything to do with the connections, it seems like the starter motor is getting stuck? If that makes any sense.  Sometimes I would get a click, then attempt to jump start it.  I would fail at jump starting it, and then try the starter button again to find that it would now start.

Your language seems to conflate push starting to jump starting...
Jump starting uses electricity,.. push starting uses your legs... Huh

Have you tried a jump start?...  that clicking may be the dcomp firing, and then the starter don't have enough juice to turn the engine over...
One way to rule it out... I'd try it before tearing things apart that may not be broken...

You are right Serowbot, I meant to write push start.

How to manually do what the decomp does...
put the tranny in gear... higher is better.
use your left hand to operate the decomp lever, if you can turn it about 90°, then you're on the exhaust stroke.
on the exhaust stroke, the starter is capable of spinning the engine w/out the decomp.
So now press and hold the start button and if it spins the engine whether it starts or not, the problem is the decomp adjustment.

Thank you for this advice verslagen.

I have read everyones posts, and it appears that the decomp adjustment may be the problem.  The bike will only start when it is on the exhaust stroke it seems.

Is there a reason why the decomp would go out of adjustment, or is this something that just happens over time?

Thank you everyone!

All cables stretch over time, and therefore need adjustment ,yours has to the point were it is not opening the exhaust valves as it should.
