Oil plug tightness (Read 77 times)

Posts: 179 Bergen County, New jersey Gender:	Oil plug tightness 09/20/16 at 19:51:48 I was wondering if the oil plug in our savage can rattle loose if snugged down. Does it have to be torqued to spec? How tight is too tight? How loose is too loose?

I don't use a torque spec. The filler cap needs to be finger tight or it will get stuck. Clymers claims 8.5-13 ft/lbs on the drain plug.

Easy does it....just snug the drain plug.....one handed.

When I first got my bike, I had to use both hands and a foot wedged against the tire to get enough power to loosen the bolt........I wonder if they thought the drain plug helps hold the engine in the frame? Several people must have done this - as we have had a few members with stripped drain plug threads.

Someday I will be old......But not today!

I'm just going from the right side of the bike, thumb on the head of the box end and my four fingers on the wrench. Im just squeezing my hand together.

Sound about right?

And those fellows that did strip the drain plug, they must have been cranking real hard, how would you even repair the threads?
