Speedo Cable Leak
09/20/16 at 11:00:02

Have driven some thousand kilometers with no issues,  but suddenly got an oil leak from where the speedo cable is attached to the engine.
I have read about the various fixes, but wondered when I took the cable off and could see no gasket or o-ring.
Aren't there supposed to be something there?  Huh

Photos show what it looked like when I had taken the cable out and just wiped it off a bit.

To loosen it?

I had to use a plier to loosen the nut (if  that is what it's called)

Okay, so it didn't start leaking because it got loose.

Any sign of an o ring? They are just famous for falling in behind the starter. There is supposed to be one, but I sure don't remember the washers,, but it's been years since I have been in there.

95% sure there was nothing there... Have checked around the starter now though.  Smiley

Everyone I've seen who had a leak had an o ring problem.
I did, too, but I don't remember the washers. Doesn't mean they weren't there.. just chill, someone will come along and fill in the blanks.

Yep, I bet you're missing the o-ring.

Here is the link (you may have already seen it) to a post that discusses this and has images of the oring you're probably missing.

Yes,  I have ordered 2 of those and looking for the o-ring as well... Just in case.

Was just completely lost, when I found nothing there.

Well, seems like the fix is easy so I'll try to adjust the valves  next. Haven't tried that in like 25 years. Not much fingerspace at the intake valves.  Undecided

Also... a tonne of liquid gasket,  both hard and soft on.. and around... the valve covers and o-ring as well. Is that really necessary?

No.
That o ring in the valve cover is the seal.
Clean flat surface and a slightly raised o ring in the valve cover, no leaks. Time for a cleaning and close inspection.

Did the cleaning and close inspection... All looks fine and the o-rings seems to keep the covers slightly raised,  so all should be fine I suppose. Just have to wait patiently for the speedo gasket now.  Smiley

Thank you for the help.

Mine appears to be leaking. Sad

Anyone know if the Ryca cable uses the same o-ring as the stock cable? I'm thinking that might be my problem because I used the stock o-ring.

Mine is currently not leaking. Would replacing the o-ring be a good idea now? It's 8 years old. If it falls behind the starter, is that going to cause a problem? I'd rather replace it now before it dries out and cracks than have to dig out pieces from the starter.

There's no problem that a full tank of gas and a sunny day can't fix!

I bought assorted o-rings from Home Depot.  There's a few in there that will get the job done.  No leaks.
