My project 2000 Suzuki Savage
09/14/16 at 17:21:43
I have been looking for another bike to work on, and I found this one on Craigslist. It needs lots of work, non-running, evidence of unknown prior work, too, but it has a clean title, 6042 miles and is complete, except for the small primary pulley for the final belt drive. What do you think?

TenSleep,
IMHO, bikes that have been stored outdoors for a long period of time are very difficult to restore. Especially the wiring and electrics can be a real PITA.

Hmmm, not sure why it won't open the folder. Are you cutting and pasting or clicking on the link? It should be a hotlink.

You are quite correct. I didn't spend much on it, and if I can't get it running relatively quickly, it is going down the road. I do want to see if I can expand my skills.

There's no problem that a full tank of gas and a sunny day can't fix!

I'd be up for a challenge if it's running and real cheap! Finished bike would be nothing like this!

I could get it to open at work....wouldn't open on my laptop.
I do have a Yahoo account on my work computer, maybe that made the difference.
You are missing the cover on the Countershaft pulley....not the primary. The "primary" gears on this bike are the ones between the crankshaft and the clutch....under the right side engine cover.

Tensleep, a project, but who knows. looking at the pics ,I'd start by checking that front pulley and teeth on the shaft, could be a deal braker if their torn up. Next is the engine ,compression(take out the plug spray some fogging oil in the cylinder,it's been setting and you don't want to scratch the walls) see if you can turn it over by hand(not frozen).next fuel, gas tank rusty? carb dirty? next spark (new plug) new battery or jump it off a car(not running) . If it spits or spuders (maybe with a shot of starter fluid) you've got a project! ps .Id shitcan the gas filter, change the oil but not the filter, and the RTV on the front maybe just loose foot peg mounting bolts. Good Luck!

If the teeth on the pulley are trashed, meehhh, not good, but, a price negotiating event.
Teeth on the shaft trashed?
I would not be a buyer unless I needed everything except the motor. .

Good list - thanks! How would you go about turning over the engine by hand?

The shaft requires splitting the cases .
