Different chrome cleaner

Ok, this is going to sound weird. After a 60 mile ride I thought I saw something on my exhaust pipe. I have a really high tolerance for heat so I swiped it off of my pipe (whatever it was). My pipe is a golden straw color. After swiping the hot pipe it left a clean shiny mark. I was intrigued so I did it again. After several swipes I managed to clean the header to a shiny dark chrome color. It wasn't brand new, off the showroom floor shiny but it was shiny. I've rubbed the pipe when cold but it didn't do a thing. I assume the pipe being hot made a difference. What gives?

Should I recommend that you guys clean your hot pipes with a naked finger? Feeling brave?  Grin

Those people are nuts! I'm not masochistic, just less susceptible to pain from heat than most.

Well I can warn you not to get a micro-fiber towel anywhere near the header when it is still not.  It takes a long time to polish that mess off the header.

One of the best ways to clean chrome is to scrape the offending spot with a nickel.  It will not scratch the chrome, but it will clean it.

Maybe skin oils combined with the heat  Undecided?
My header is a dark golden but I've not tried to change that.

A new movie
Silence of the Hands
innocents, taken captive, forced to polish exhaust systems,
And bringing new meaning to the words
By Hand.

I've got a small spot at the bottom of the header where I've burned my boot. I won't use my finger on that!

Oven cleaner.  Works a treat.  Don't get it on the paint.
Here's what I've done:
Get the header hot.  Spray a good amount of oven cleaner on a damp, rough terry cloth towel folded so it's thick (cotton, not synthetic!).  Place or hold the oven cleaner on the towel against whatever's stuck on the header; often melted rain paints or a plastic bag blown against it while riding.  If you can keep the oven cleaner on the spot a good long time, it helps.  Then just rub the rest off with the towel.  Repeat as needed.
