Will do. I'll take it tonight or first thing in the morning and have it checked out.

Thanks!

I pulled the starter and took it to Auto zone to have them test it. They said they couldn't test it. I went to O'Reilly's to have them test it. They said they couldn't test it either. I bench tested it myself and it spins very fast and operates like it should with 12v applied.

The starter solenoid I replaced the original with is a

Any thoughts?

Yea, don't connect the starter hot wire and hit the start button.
See what happens to the battery voltage.

OK....this thread has really got me confused.  If you hit the starter button, and the starter motor spins the engine over for a while.....why are you removing the starter and looking for trouble?

If the engine turns over for a bit - but doesn't start, then eventually the stater stops and the solenoid goes "click, click, click" it is an indication you have run the battery down and it no longer has enough power to run the starter an longer.

Since the bike can start if you push start it, it appears the ignition and carb are working OK.  I suspect your battery just doesn't have enough power to run the starter and keep the voltage high enough to run the ignition system and make a spark while the starter motor is running.

Have you checked the battery voltage while the starter motor is running?  Have you tried using a car battery to jump the bike (car not running) and see if it will start with more battery power?

He reported a very low voltage.
I have asked twice if he is running the starter more than a few seconds. I don't see the answer, but he replaced the original starter due to broken magnets.

He had the battery tested. 220cca he reported.

An Exact description of the process is in order, down to an approximate number of seconds before the battery drops below 12 volts.
I'm Thinking it's pretty much immediate based on what I am getting.

Order of steps

1. Hook fully charged battery up with jumper cables to my truck
2. Turn on switch
3. Reading 12.4v with meter on battery
4. Reading 12.4v at solenoid
5. Hit start button
6. Hear decomp click
7. Hear solenoid click
8. Starter slowly turns engine over gwhrr gwhrr gwhrr
9. Click click click
10. Check battery voltage. Reads 12.4v
11. Hit start button
12. Hear decomp click
13. Hear solenoid click
14. Starter slowly turns engine over gwhrr gwhrr gwhrr
15. Click click click
16. Checking voltage on starter post during button depress says 6v. Before button press reads 12.4v

We need to know what the battery voltage is "while" the starter motor is turning the engine over.

(Yep....it takes about 4 hands to be able to do that while using the starter button).

Dave, this seems to be what you're asking...Happybandit wrote on 08/18/16 at 10:26:15:
Thank you so much for your help so far.I went ahead and cleaned it and ran another ground wire. Still the same condition. I got my wife to hold the multimeter to the battery while I press the button. The meter drops from 12.45v to around 6v. Is that normal? I took my battery to O'Reilly's yesterday and they said it was fine. Even when hooked to my truck it show's the voltage drop. This has been a fun one the past couple days  Tongue

Next question... have you done any work on the engine lately?  (other than yank the starter out)

I pulled the tank off to make sure the decomp was adjusted properly. Other than that, I haven't done any work to it.

Leave the starter hot wire off.
See what happens to the battery voltage.
Probably nothing but it might be telling.

That doesn't sound normal to me.....I will check my bike(s) tonight and see what happens.

This would say it's a bad battery.
check the resistance on the starter.
if you have a short, it will drop the volts.

Battery tests good
Nobody was set up to test the starter
But an unloaded bench test Seems normal
And
It's new

He said he adjusted the decomp,it may not be opening the exhaust valves at all,and the starter working overtime?he's jumping it with a truck battery and it's turning the motor over slowly? If  the starter is stoping after only three revs  I'd be checking to see if the exhaust valves are opening at all.
