vandalised savage
07/31/16 at 08:54:08

thursday night i went out to check see how much petrol was in the bike as i had to use it for work on friday, its easier for me to get fuel at night than in the morning
i couldnt open the fuel tank. the cap has been glued shut. i filled the key hole with acetone and kept working the key for about an hour until i got it open.

friday morning as i left for work the bike was hard to start, once i got it going it was backfiring and cutting out, the fuel line was full of holes so i replaced that. now the bike starts n idles ok but as soon as i rev it it mis fires and back fires. theres no power and it keeps cutting out.

any ideas on where to start looking for the problem?
ive checked the wiring loom and everything seems ok there
please help as i need to get to work tomorrow morning n the savage is my only transport at the moment

How much acetone do you think went into the gas?
Maybe some of the dissolved glue went through?

Have you recently ditched a girlfriend?
Don't tell Anyone about it.
If anyone says
Hey, I heard about your bike.
You know who did it.

only used about 2ml of acetone, wouldnt think that would be enough to do any harm to the fuel. got an idea who done it but thats not up for discussion on the internet. incriminating evidence n all that, at the moment getting to work on monday is a bigger problem. its 30 miles out into the sticks and theres no busses

Get it running , upright, not on sidestand, goose it and let it cut out.
Hit the kill switch, off the ignition,
Drain the bowl and see if it's full.

The dissolved glue may be in the screen by the float valve.
Or, possibly the screen on the petcock.
Does it run differently on prime?

I would definitely drop the bowl if you can and if possible drop the petcock and clean the tank a bit. May just be trash...they may have somehow gotten crap in your tank too!!!!!

Is the vacuum line full of holes?...

Also,.. how does the oil look in the sightglass.. (they tampered with your gascap,.. they may have tampered with your oil)...

oil looks ok, had float bowl off and it was full with clean looking fuel
it runs ok at idle, will rev ok for a few seconds then it starts spluttering n backfiring

Acetone won't harm the gas or affect the running.  But I hope you took the cap apart after you got it off and flushed it out.

check if you got glue in the gas cap vents.

Sorry Verslagen I must have been typing at the same time that you were replying.

Pyke,

Some of the glue may have clogged the air vents in the gas cap.

You might want to disassemble the cap and soak it in acetone. And after reassembly squirt some 3 in1 oil in the mechanism and then blot away any excess oil with a Kleenex.

Good Luck

That would be the most direct approach. If you drop the bowl, pull the float pin, drop the gas flow control and make sure that screen is clear. If the screws have never been out, don't expect it to be easy. They are not Phillips heads. They are JIS. But, a #2 Phillips that has been ground down, flattening the tip until the X fills the screw X it will work, but having the carb on the bench makes it much easier. A battery powered impact is really good. And some Good penetrating oil, half and half acetone and transmission fluid is great. Wintergreen oil, or Kroil, PB Blaster, in that order.  Antisieze going back together.

Act like something is kinda bugging you, but don't say what around the suspect. Not bad, just be slightly preoccupied, not upset, not angry, just distracted,,see if the suspect says anything about your bike.

If so, just ask,

Why, did you hear something?

Be careful of your tone, no  accusatory implications,

ive done the petcock check and ive stripped and rebuilt the fuel cap, the petcock is working properly and the fuel tank is venting

it starts and runs perfectly untill i open the throttle, at that point it starts to miss fire, hold the throttle open to see if it clears itself and it just missfires worse. ive replaced the plug and checked the spark. ive also had the carb apart twice now, both times the float bol has been full of clean fuel, i even pulled the fuel line with it running and theres a good flow of fuel into the can.

am i right in the fact theres a decent spark means its fuel related and not electrical? i have had the tank and seat off n cant see anything cut or disconnected. i checked all the multi plugs were connected properly.

i dont know what to try next, any suggestions?? i need to get to work in less than 12hrs

Might be worth dumping that fuel and starting fresh.

also if you have a volt meter, check the running voltage.
if it's low it can backfire.
