"This house is protected by Smith and Wesson" signs,.. might as well say,...
Cum n' get 'em...
Not if you know how to handle 'em. They'd have to sneak in while you're away and hope you don't have a steel safe bolted to the floor. Then when you get home, they'll have to hope you're not both armed and skilled with your weapon.
I've mentioned it before. A firearm is just a tool. It's no more than furniture otherwise. "Man with a gun" not "gun" or "man" alone.
Instead of saying, "This house is protected by Smith and Wesson," you could say, "This house is protected by deadly force."
Look up "No Trespassing, Violators Will Be Shot."
Seriously, I don't think you should shoot or kill people just because they're there. They might actually want to see you.
What if you came to someone's doorstep to ask for help after a bike wreck, and they just opened the door and shot you just because they didn't want you around?
I don't think all trespassers deserve to be shot (maybe some do
). The ones that do are probably doing more than trespassing.
You could do even better. "No Trespassing, Violators will be found in shallow graves." Then they don't even know you have a gun.
Of course, then every time someone gets dug up, the cops will be at your house.
How about, "No Trespassing, Violators shall never be found/ never return/ disappear" Something creepy to scare people away.
Look up "redneck no trespassing signs"
