Replaced bags, bike won't start in gear w/stand dn

Zipper broke on my saddle bags, replaced them with a heavier-duty set. The thicker material connecting the bags made putting the saddle back on a bit of a struggle. Now, the bike won't start in gear with the kickstand down. I assume I shorted or disconnected something under the seat, but I can't see what. Where should I be looking?

At least until now I believe it has worked that way. Then again, I never start it that way, so I must be remembering wrong. Thanks.

In all cases, clutch lever must be squeezed to start.

I'm determined to get my motorcycle maintenance chops back. Harder, after 37 years, than getting riding back was after 33 (though less scary - I gave myself two days to re-learn, then rode the bike home 350 miles, a white-knuckle experience!).

That's balls, man.. We bought mine and I was all excited. Then, time for the helmet and toss a leg over... I almost couldn't. I hadn't ridden in over thirty years and had been too sick to even drive for quite a few years,,,but I. Was doing better and I Wanted that Bike, so,I rode it home..and picked the least traffic laden road s I could find.

For me it was 1979-2012. I wrecked my back doing construction work and couldn't drive, much less ride, for quite a while. Riding became part of my past. Then my brother offered me his S40, which he hadn't ridden in 3 years (he rides a Bonneville and two Harley's), if I picked it up. So I read a couple books on motorcycle safety, bought a helmet and a bus ticket, and in 4 days I had my first 350 miles under my belt.

Interested in other stories, but they probably belong in the Cafe. I'll start a thread.

I was off 1979-09. Now off again. I'm deciding now if I can ride any more. Inherited Neuropathy causing legs to weaken and falling occasionally. I've had a great time in the last 19,000 miles. I have no idea why anyone would buy a Rebel when they could have a Savage, unless they don't know about them. Rebel is a good ride, I'm sure. 650 is great!
