Detent position on choke, query.

We have a gs500 and a recent s40 and I have noticed a completely different choke behaviour so I was wondering if there really is a difference or if it's just my imagination.

On the gs the choke lever is infinitely variable with no detent position it's either on, off or somewhere between, and behaves as I'd expect it to, which is as soon as it starts with full choke it is ticking over very fast an immediately needs to be turned down a bit and gradually turned down to off as it's warm.

However on the s40 there is on and off but there is a special detent position in between on and off that clicks into place. For all I know it could be a random point they chose, or they have chosen this point specifically, because the behaviour is very different to the gs.

From cold I'll pull the choke out all the way and when it starts unlike the gs it does not immediately race away it just stays at a fairly placid rpm being a bit lumpy and when it is pushed down to the detent position the rpm goes UP, but smoother. then when pushed all the way in the rpm goes down again.

Has the choke mechanism and how it works with relation to the jets been specifically designed for the characteristics of the respective bikes? Why does full choke out not make the engine rev fast as it does on the gs, is this because the single cylinder 4 valve design requires this?

It stumbles and runs too rich. The halfway detent runs best for me. I can't explain it. I just know what works for me.

The choke on the S40 is an enrichment valve. Rather than choking off the air flow like a regular choke, it allows more fuel in for starting. The middle detent is best described as a fast idle for fuel enriched warm up.

Don't let the bike sit on the sidestand idling. There is a cam lubrication issue if the bike isn't upright.

I grew up in the age of chokes and even throttle knobs on the dash of trucks--use the choke for cranking and the throttle for warming up--or you ain't going nowhere. Every vehicle has its quirks and yours are no different. My 2001 will not crank when cold without a little choke on a 90 degree day. Runs good after a mile, so no problem.

Don't remember what the pilot is. They were in it when I got it and it runs great so I haven't messed with them. I'm at 800 feet above sea level.

Sounds really rich to me.....nobody really needs 155 jets.

However.....the choke (enrichment knob) only works on the pilot jet circuit, so the main jet size doesn't affect how the choke works. The main jet doesn't really do much below half throttle.

Reply #13 - 07/07/16 at 16:16:04 Mine was too, but it ran really well.. And got 51 MPG with the girl driving, I got 49 .. I had a Stage One cam, and a Supertrapp with 14 disks.
