Choke operation
06/29/16 at 12:55:14

Still experimenting with my "new" 2007 S40.  Bought a Clymer manual-a bit sketchy on carb adjustments.   Anyway, I noticed today that once the bike is warmed up and Im cruising on an open stretch of highway at 50mph,  that if I slightly pull the choke out a bit, maybe close to that detent built into it, that my bike will seem to run a bit better and accelerate slightly. What is that telling me?  There does't seem to be any mechanism for adjusting the choke, but likely something internal to the carb needs attention.

That is telling you that your jetting is a bit lean....which is how the EPA prefers it.

You don't need to do anything with your choke....you need to drill out the brass plug so you can adjust the idle fuel mixture, jet your carb and work on the white spacer for the slide needle.  The bike obviously needs a bit more fuel in the mix.

I don't know your elevation....but a #50 to #52.5 pilot, #150 main, and 2 or 3 washers in place of the white spacer works for me at around 800' elevation msl.

When running lean the engine will surge a little at a steady cruise. Post your elevation. I'm at sea level (+ a few feet) so I didn't have to jet much richer than stock.

There's no problem that a full tank of gas and a sunny day can't fix!

Sea level? You're at 370' or so, my place, the highest in the county, is at 410'.

At sea level run 155/55 or 152.5/52.5 (preferred as the first combo will be sooty). From 200' to 4000' run 152.5/52.5 or 150/50, either is fine. Above 4000' leave the jets alone.

I grew up riding in real mountains, the Cascades and Rockies. I despise fuel injection, so got fairly tolerable at jetting swaps... 🍻

I was considering anything <1000' to be around sea level. My car shows elevation and I think it usually reads around 320-340' or so.

I left my jets stock since I'm in Denver (the lean air already compensates for the stock lean jetting) but how about the washers vs. white spacer?  My bike does surge some at lower RPM's.  I tried washers when I first got the bike and it wouldn't go over about 30 mph so sumthin' was wrong.  Put the spacer back it was fine (except the aforementioned surging at low RPM's).
